Hey Guys.  I recently built a Spikes 16" Middy.  I love the weapon but have been thinking about shooting 22lr out of it.  Which would be better on the gun; get the conversion kit or get a dedicated upper to shoot 22lr?  How much would the conversion kit run me if I went that way and would it affect my rifle?  As you can see I am just looking for some input and tips on what would work best.

Thanks,

I am looking into this as well. I think that a dedicated upper is the way to go, or even a dedicated rifle like the S&W M&P 15-22. The bore for a .22 lr is .221. For a 5.56/.223 it is .224. I have also read most newer ar twist rates are not slow enough for the .22 lr. For the price of most dedicated uppers you could get a whole rifle like the Smith. I handled the Smith the other day and it feels great! Charging handle operates as you will be used to and the bolt locks back on an empty mag. It was priced at 480 but I did find them lower on line last night. Once I get enough saved up this is the route I am most likely going to take.

I went with a CMMP stainless .22 conversion kit with 3 mags from PSA for $200 and I am gonna use it in one of my ARs with a 1/9 twist that I don't use much anyway since I got a couple more higher quality ARs

no experience with the conversion kits through a standard AR

but my CMMG dedicated upper was the best purchase ive made in awhile... seriously.
