I've been reading the posts, and it looks like some people have had firing pin issues or out of battery issues with their 22lr uppers.  I've had my eye on the Bushmaster 20" one, but I'm concerned over getting a lemon jammomatic (like my 10/20)

Anyway, do people have experience putting many rounds through one of the dedicated uppers without a problem?  After all, using 22 to save money could be false economy if your upper busts easily and needs expensive repairs.

I range-tested my new Spike's upper last week and put 500 rounds downrange without a single problem.

Except for an OOB KaBOOM that blew out its extractor the first day I shot it (oversized ammo problem), my DPMS .22 M4 has been 100% reliable for thousands and thousands of rounds since.

My M261 unit has also been extremely reliable, provided that it's kept lubed (especially the recoil spring/guide) and the chamber cleaned out every few hundred rounds or so.

I'm very pleased with the reliability of both.

My experiences are pretty much the same as Snake45's.

My DPMS just fired OOB on Saturday. It is already back at DPMS for a warranty repair.  I have put 5488 rounds through it.

I have a Ciener kit in a KKF dedicated .22 upper that has over 18000 rounds through it.  The firing pin broke about 1000 to 2000 rounds back, but it was a cheap and easy fix.

I'd recomend either.

My M261 kit works great, provided you keep it cleaned and lubed.  Carry a can of brake cleaner and Breakfree to the range, hose it off every 300-400 rounds and relube.

Used A2 upper
Colt 1-12 pencil barrel
Ciener unit
Disabled gas tube
Right at 100% reliability and 2" accuracy at 100 yards. I just installed a set of JP reduced power hammer/trigger springs. Haven't tried the rifle since.

I've got both the Ciener conversion and the CZ upper and they work fine, but cleanliness is very critical; especially when you use lubed ammo. The copper plated stuff is better. It's still the same stock, pistol and forend grips, so the cheaper the bullets, the more you shoot.

My DPMS M4 has been 100% reliable for thousands of rounds ONCE I discovered the ammo it likes (WalMart Federal bulk pack). Runs like a Swiss watch.

What ammo are you using in that?

Fed bulk - works great but accuracy is only so so
Fed Champion Target - works great and great accuracy
CCI Mini Mags - ditto Fed CT

I have the 20" Bushy upper, so far no issues been great!

My Ciener kit has been 100% reliable since polishing the wear areas and switching to Blackdg mags. I probably have over 5K rounds through mine without a single issue other than ammo related problems. The Remington bulk has been giving me fits with alot rounds without priming compound, about 1 in 50.

I have a 1/8 stainless barrel with the gas tube disabled to keep the crud out of the receiver. I normally quit shooting at about 1k and have never had an issue from getting dirty.

As far as your jammomatic 10/22, try going over to www.rimfirecentral.com and poking around. There are a lot of common problems that are easy, free fixes if the jamming is not related to mags or ammo. One of the easiest things to check if you have ever taken the hammer spring out is flip it, if i remember right the open end of the flat washer capturing the spring faces down. It goes in one eay and if it is upside down it will cause a lot of issues. The next thing to check is the extractor to make sure the edges aren;t worn and if needed get a Volquartsen extractor and install it.

Here is a pic of the part I am talking about flipping:

I have a M16  ciener kit with a cheap barrel I bought off the internet and no gas tube.
My M16 22lr ciener conversion is reliable and enjoyable.
I run the inexpensive Federal 550 copper coated rounds bulk ammo from WalMart. It is cheap and burns fairly clean.

In full auto mode I have a 22lr dummy round for the last round. That way the firing pin drops on the plastic dummy round instead of metal to metal. The dummy round takes the beating instead of the firing pin.

Here's a suggestion. take the bolt out, clean everthing to make it easier to work on. then press on the firing pin, it should come almost  flush with the bolt head, no farther. almost flush with bolt head allows maximum strike on the primer, without possibility of peening the chamber face. that way you don't have to fool with a dummy round, which is a different good solution to the problem. I read way back of someone making a replacement ciener firing pin from an AR15 firing pin, and tried it for myself, it works great. I have over 2K through the new pin, it's still working fine.
I haven't tried the Federal 550's yet, I will. I use Rem Golden Bullets, or Winch Dynapoints when they were cheaper. I also found that Aguila SE 38gr works well and stays subsonic in my 5 1/2" bbl/suppressor setup.
I love my ciener upper!!  suppressed is so nice, and fun for newbies to shoot. mine runs best with a squirt of CLP on the bolt, held horizonal, and allowed to sit for a minute or two. lasts for about 5 magazines, squirt 2nd time, do 4-5 mags, then clean everything with brake cleaner & repeat CLP & shoot. wear old clothes, it's not a clean operation, but fun usually isn't....    mine is a slick-side upper, and metal ciener mags, which load in a flash with loader from m60joe.

I couldn't agree with you more.  You even shoot the same ammo and have the same 5.5" barrel.  I run a tac-65 can on mine.  I did have one OOB when i first got it but i have had none since.  I now make sure everything is lubed well with clp.  When i first got it, i kept it kinda dry--i am assuming that is what caused the OOB.  I usually go through 10 30rnd BDM mags before i tear it down and give her a good cleaning.  That has been working well and i have had no other failures at all.  I do find the aguila to be dirtier than the dynapoints and it smells kinda funny too.  But, it still shoots great out of my upper.

So, i'd say to the OP that a .22 kit is well worth the money.  It is great because you can practice with the ar platform and not spend a ton of money on ammo.  And mine has worked great since i started lubing it well.

raffica,
Thanks for the suggestion on the firing pin. Where do you get the Winch Dynapoints?
We don't have them at WalMart in Arizona. We used to have them at WalMart.

Kmart has dynapoints.
