Let's say the parameters are: AR Carbine; 10"-16" bbl; quad rail; telestock; 2 point sling (brand doesn't matter.) Front sling mount location choices are FSB (M4, GG&G "Sling Thing", etc.), at the front of the rail, or at the rear of the rail near the barrel nut. The rear sling mount location choices are at the rear of the receiver, or on the buttstock. Which two locations do you choose, and why?

Rear of rail and rear of receiver for me. Best compromise for my usage between stability and freedom of movement.

After messing with my 2 point sling positions I came to the conclusion that I like mine mounted at the "end of the rail by the barrel nut, toward the receiver" and "at the end of the receiver" in my noveske QD end plate.

I came to this decision because it gives me more options to transition to the support side if the need be without having to slide my arm through the sling.

It depends how I want my sling to perform, if I want to have my weapon horizontally level when carrying it like in a patrol carry I connect the front sling to the front of the rail and the rear of the sling on the rear of the buttstock.

If I want my carbine to hang muzzle down on my support side when using my backup sidearm the front sling is attached to the rear of the rail and the rear sling on the buttstock.

For faster strong to support side transistions, the front sling is on the rear of the rail and the rear sling on the rear of the receiver, but when you release your weapon and let it hang be very careful and control your muzzle, it will not naturally hang muzzle down, if uncontrolled the muzzle will sweep the other guys around you.

I was going to start a new thread on this exact subject, but luckily the folks here ask good questions.  I have a Robarms XCR 5.56 with a Blue Force VCAS AA, Daniel Defense QD sling mount, and a Magpul CTR.  I'll post some pics when my gear arrives from Area 51 tomorrow.

It truly depends on the weapon being slung and what you plan to accomplish with the weapon / sling combination.

As a general rule:

––You can achieve increased retention by placing the connection points further apart ( rear of stock, front of rail ).

––You can achieve increased mobility including shooting off your reaction side by placing the connection points closer together ( rear of receiver, rear of rail ).

However, the above doesn't hold true in all circumstances with all weapon platforms.

Ultimately, I choose what works for my situation, my needs, with my particular weapon in a given circumstance. This can easily change each and every time I pick up a weapon.

XCR 5.56 w/ Blue Force VCAS AA and Daniel Defense QD rail swivel.  I ordered a second qd swivel that fit into a receiver on the Magpul CTR stock.  I am not quite finished finding the sweet spot in the sling, thus the loose slack.

DD Offset at the front of the rail and the butt stock is what I like. The offset allows the rifle to hang better too.
