| I am working out the bugs of my AR 308. One of the things that I can't help to notice is it kick hard! I have a bolt action 308 and it isn't nearly as hard. The bolt gun has a 1/4" thick pad and the AR is a hard M4 style stock. I would have thought that, it might be less recoil with the gas system. |
| Gotta be something wrong in the gas and/or buffer setup in that rifle. I got rid of my Savage .308 bolt rifle after getting a pair of Armalite AR10's because of the soft recoil of my AR10's. A good .308 AR setup should not be a serious recoil weapon. What brand .308 do you have there? You mention carbine...is that just the stock? What's the barrel length and length of gas system? I have a 16" carbine AR10 with a mid-length gas system and carbine stock. It shoots about as smooth as my AR10 with 20" barrel, rifle gas length, and rifle stock. Sounds like something in not balanced in the gas and buffer system. Where is your brass ejecting in the 12 to 6 o'clock observation? |

The first thing I do to any 308 AR is to install an adjustable gas block. A properly set up 308 AR with a good muzzle brake won't have any more perceived recoil than a .223 bolt action. I've also found the rate reducing buffers to give a noticeable reduction in felt recoil on 308 ARs and large caliber AR-15s. |

Quoted: My M&P 10 kicked pretty hard when I bought it, the addition of a JM muzzle brake and a more comfortable stock makes it feel like an AR-15 now. JM muzzle break? This one? http://www.midwayusa.com/product/910504/dpms-muzzle-brake-miculek-5-8-24-thread-lr-308-steel-parkerized |

The bruise on my shoulder from firing ~150 rounds last Saturday through a GII just disappeared yesterday. 150-168gr loads, not loaded to max. No muzzle brake. (Should clarify, this was a Recon, with a Minimalist stock, not really a light gun. Sitting on a chair, firing from a non-solid table)
Some probably have more or less under-skin padding in that area. My .303 with max 174/180gr loads took a lot less rounds to do the same bruising, but with a soft rubber buttpad, which the GII does not have. Not saying it was necessarily painful, but it was noticeable especially as the day went on. Friend shot it and said he was surprised at how little recoil there was, so who knows? |

Quoted: Yep. Even with the original stock it was a night and day difference in recoil. The M&P10 is pretty light as far as 308 AR's go though. | op, something's not right with your .308 AR. My l1a1 has less felt recoil than my SKS and way less than the .30-06 with two mercury buffer tubes in the stock and .30-06 is basically the same muzzle energy as .308. I'm not familiar enough with my 5.56 AR to give advice on what's going on but I know when I switch 7.62 ammo to a noticeably hotter surplus, I dial in the gas system in the first few rounds and if I was overgassed the recoil feels worse. l1a1/FAL adjustable gas system ftw...I wish there was a decently affordable FAL style gas block and piston system for a AR10 variant... Nah I'll just buy another FAL. I need to drive to IL anyways. DSA has what I want. |

Perceived kick is a function of rifle weight, bullet weight and powder charge. .308's kick much more than .223's, nothing much can be done about it, especially if you have a light weight 16" barrel.
While some people have suggested a muzzle brake, I doubt you'll feel much difference. Mounting a free float tube and a Harris bipod will reduce the recoil at the expense of increased weight. I've probably fired 10,000 rounds through M1-A's and M1 Garands and while they kick, their 10 lb.+ weight makes the experience almost pleasant. A light weight 6 lb. hunting rifle in .308 or .30-06 is a decidedly different experience. |

Quoted: kynshot hydraulic buffer with JP spring in my .308 AR and it has literally no kick at all, one of the best upgrades i ever put on it. This here? http://kynshot.com/rb5005-ar-308-standard-collapsable-stock/ & this spring here? http://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=JPS-OSR.308 ? |

Before spending money, OP, make sure you're getting the rifle properly shouldered. If you get the wrong part of the stock on the wrong part of your shoulder, it'll feel awful. It only takes a tiny bit of movement to go from great to awful with stock position.
Remember, little guys, 5'6" and 125 pounds, pushed Garands across the Pacific and across Europe... If they could manage that rifle, your straight-line recoiling, ergonomically better AR shouldn't be a major problem. |

Thank you for all the input. I just shot my 1917 (30-06) and the recoil was nothing. The AR308 is hard. I'm going to look at the buffers and a stock. I just put a butt pad on it and will shoot it this weekend. FIRST have someone visually ensure that you're shouldering the AR correctly. It's different because of the straight-line design and it won't "feel" the same as an Enfield, Springfield, Garand, etc. Make sure you need something new before you spend money. |
