This year I've decided to try not to buy anymore guns, instead I plan on putting money into the ones I have and stacking ammo.

I have a DPMS Oracle which in my opinion is pretty nice and a great shooter. The barrel however is a heifer and super meaty.

I could have the barrel re-contoured to a lighter profile for $120 bucks.  OR I could just order a new barrel from Ranier Arms for $270 and change.

I would like to keep it at the 16 inch mark, i've even thought about chopping it to 14.5 and pin and welding a brake on it.

What do you think?

Heres the rifle in question.

Fulton's ultralight barrel has been tempting me.

I think reprofiling will be the most economical option.

Seems to me that the Oracle has a 16" carbine barrel. I have one. You are the one that has turned the rifle into a heavy SOB.

Sure I modified mine too. Adjustable gas block, JP low mass carrier. Geissele trigger. Apex hand guard.
But I kept it carbine  length. It's not heavy.

Want to make the rifle lighter?
Lose the 15" hand guard, the bipod, and leave the barrel alone.
Hell just get rid of that bipod.
You want to re profile the barrel when that's not the problem. The weight problem is what YOU did to it.

That's not a bench rest rifle. It's a carbine.

I could be wrong. Maybe you got a different kind of Oracle than I did.
It's all just a matter of opinion. In the end, do what makes YOU HAPPY! that's all that really counts!

Yeah the scope and bipod are coming off.  Its going to wear a PRO and BUIS. I still am gonna have the barrel re profiled regardless.

Mine has a BUIS, and a TA31, that's all. It shoots great for what I want it for.
Aren't you worried that you might mess up what is now a good shooter for you now if you cut the barrel? It'll change the harmonics. Might take a change in ammo to bring it back around.
I hope it works out for you!!
I noticed the barrels recommended.
I have 2 MEGA10's they both have SS Krieger's on them. The 1 Mega is just a beast. Heavy fluted barrel, JP brake. It doesn't even move when shot off the bench. But it's not a carry it around the woods gun!!
I would think that maybe a light weight from them or Lija, might be a good bet. If your profile doesn't work
I'm thinking about a fluted Lija for a 15 build.
The Dpms is the lightest of the bunch.  Mega's out shoot it. But then they have Lupy MK4 scopes on them.
All in all I'm happy with the DPMS. Just wish I'd have built it, instead of change things around on it. Would have been cheaper.
But it was my first go with a .308 in the AR platform.

Thats one of the things i worry about. Its a pretty decent shooter now. Well to be honest it isn't shit right now because Troy still has my damn rail i had to send in.

Whats the worst case scenario I buy another barrel? I'm ok with that.......

DPMS barrels have massive amounts of meat. Even the 16 inch barrels are fat as hell. More than is needed imo. Seems it could be lightened up considerably. But I have not seen an inaccurate DPMS yet. Maybe you should hold out for a GII?
