Need to pick up some 308. Hirt is preferred. Anyone have a source that they KNOW the ammo is good and clean. Thanks TXL |

Quoted: I'm getting it from AIM (port) for $149 delivered/1k. It shoots flawlessly in my M1A and CETME. Best bargain goin' as far as I'm concerned. I think Sportsman's guide has port. |

Gents, I have a question about Portuguese surplus .308 reliability. I bought two cases from Sportsman's Guide of 147gr. sealed in battlepacks. In the first 120 rounds I've already had three failures to fire where the primer has taken a hell of a wack and not ignited. I tried several times with the last failure and still couldn't get it to launch. Has anyone else experienced this with this ammo? Another question; the bullets also fail the magnet test. I was told the Portuguese used copper-jacketed lead. Are there two (or more) types of Portuguese surplus 7.62 ammo available? Thanks much, BT |
| I've only shot about 600 rounds of Port, but I have not had any failures to fire either. I suppose that I would not trust surplus ammo, that was stored who knows how (in a baking desert metal building, in a damp cellar etc), for anything other than range work; but I have had good luck with Port, although I have only fired it though my HK91, which might hit the primers harder than whatever you were using[?] |

Wouldn't happen to be a FAL, would it? |

MarkM, "Neither copper or lead are ferrous metals, jethro." Thanks for your insight. When I said it failed the magnet test I meant that the magnet stuck, so obviously I'm dealing with ferrous metal vice the preferred copper and lead, and not what I was led to expect. Gloftoe, The rifle was an FAL and is new to me, so perhaps I have a problem with the rifle. I'll switch out the ammo and see if the problem reoccurs. Thanks for your assistance. TxLewis, Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. The answers are valuable to me too. My apologies. BT |

Well just an FYI (and I hope not a post hijack) My DSA FAL had problems with light primer strikes on Port ammo, and I cured it by replacing the hammer/trigger/sear pack with one made by FSE (bought it from Arizona Gunrunners) Problem has since not cropped up again. |

I had a few light strikes with Port in my AR-10 after it carbonned up a bit (about 200 rd). The primers seem to be harder then most and the ammo appears to be a little on the dirty side. It could be my rifle just needs to break in too since I have less than 500 rd through it. I'm going to try dry lubing the bolt and carrier in hopes of keeping it cleaner. The Port is good accurate ammo though and I think it's a good buy for the money. |
