This started in Parkers thread, what loads and velocities have you worked up in a semi 308? these are maximum loads in my rifle, back off at least 5% and work up From a custom Mike Rock 5R blank, 11.25 twist 18" Palma chamber H4895 44gr 155gr moly Scenars ave. 2765fps using all Lapua cases H322 40gr 155gr moly Scenars ave 2728 RE10x 39gr 155gr moly Scenars ave 2673 748 45gr 155gr moly Scenars ave 2694 H4895 41.7gr 168gr SMK ave 2593 Varget 42gr 168gr SMK ave 2614 I have 18" and 24" Kriegers i haven't had time to test, like everyone else I'm waiting on a break in the weather. I did buy 2 boxes of Blackhills 168 and 175, first rifle ammo I've bought in over 15 years LOL. Using Quick Target to figure the ballistics at sea level; The 155 scenar needs 2300fps at the muzzle to reach 1000yds SS 168 needs 2600fps 175 needs 2430fps Isn't it about time we had an unbiased FAQ 308 sticky? too bad Tim's not interested in the 308 ![]() |

We started in Parkers thread about "sniper school" , we were talking about staying super sonic at 1000yds but, I didn't want to hijack any further so I posted this topic and everyone bailed. I have a ton of testing to do but I don't like shooting when it's 20 degrees and snow blowing down my neck. I have 2 -18", 1 -20" and 1 -24" 308 I need to shoot for "group proof" before I sell them. Then 3 other personal rifles I need to get ready for this years shoots. |

I have no chronograph, so no muzzle velocitys. The load I found that worked best (so far) with my DPMS LR 308, 18" cryo barrel is: Federal brass full length resized with Lee dies, Winchester LR primers, Sierra 168 gr HPBT Match bullet, 41 gr. IMR 4895, COAL 2.8". Sierra claims 2600 fps from a 26" barrel with this load This load is nearly max in the Sierra load manual. It shoots 5/8" 5 shot groups @ 100 yds consistently. It might be be better than that, but I cannot hold any better and don't have a fore & aft rest. Note to those using Federal brass, I have weighed a lot of my .308 fed brass & found that it consistently weighs MORE than LC, NATO brass, which weighs more than Winchester & Remington commercial brass. I can conclude that Federal brass has even LESS internal capacity than LC. Therefore, beware of overpressure using load data based upon "commercial" brass. This smaller capacity may be the reason that Fed brass has a reputation of having loose primer pockets after a couple of reloads. I bought some Sierra 155 HPBT Palma bullets to try. I'll work with them next month to see what kind of groups I get. (any advice for the Palma bullets in a DPMS from you wizards of x ring out there?) http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p235/RogerS_photo/groups1207001.jpg Picture is 10 rds @ 100 yds, the two low and two right side were sighters, other 7 with no adjustment. A further piece of information, for those that do not reload, I found that the Federal 150 grain Power Shok ammo shoots very well in my rifle. I get consistent 7/8" groups at 100 yds with this stuff. The best part is that it is under $11.00 per box of 20 at Wal Mart. Yes, inexpensive ammo that shoots darn good! Roger |
I use that 41gr load but in H4895. You're right it's a good load, I've been using that with 165 hunting bullets for years. Sierras shoot well .010 off of the lands or .020 into the lands but drop the charge a little before you shoot from the lands. |
| i have a 24" standard grade wilson barrel, 1/10". i tried 168, 175, 180, and 190gr matchkings. the 180gr shot best, the 175gr close behind. submoa at 200/300yds. rem brass, cci primers, varget, and a cws. the 180 gr like 42.8gr and the 175gr 43gr, get primer flow but pockets are still tight and no head sep signs. havent reworked it using lapua brass and cci benchrests yet. |
I'll bet those 175s are super at 1000 huh? pretty stout load for a AR |
havent had access to anything over 400yds, and havent shot them over a chrony yet. was going for accuracy only, but hopefully this summer i can get some velocity numbers. brass is holding up well with the cws. i think i had worked up to at least 44gr. primers got flatter and accuracy degraded, but those were hot. |
