| I'm building a LR308 pattern AR10. I am not inclined to go with 308 so I've considered 7mm-08, 243, and 338 Federal. I am leaning 338. I am open to suggestions on where to get a 338 Fed barrel. I am also open to having one fo you more learned folks talk me out of the 338 Federal if you can give me some good logic behind avoiding it. |

I built mine using DPMS upper, BCG, stripped lower, and DPMS barrel, all bought from Midway. This was right at 5 years ago. When I got mine the only barrel offered by DPMS (sold separately) was a stainless, fluted, 18 inch that was blackened and rifle gassed. Well, the flutes are a joke, very shallow, look good but do nothing. The barrel is, however, a damned tack driver. I have not had many loads go over 1.5 MOA for 5 shots at 100 yards and many go sub 1 MOA for 5 at 100. Now they make a 20 inch for sale (barrel only) and I wish I had that one but it is what it is and I am not about to crap-can my old barrel.
When I did mine .338 F cases were scarce as hen's teeth so I formed .308 brass with a trip through the sizing die using a tapered expander button. I have 5 loadings on them now and no problems at all but you will noticed formed .308 brass will come up short and that is not an issue. The only bad thing I can think of, regardless of what the DPMS bashers will sure to be along to proclaim, is that if you miss, it's your fault bub. Don't blame the rifle. |
| Hope you reload. Got a 338 Fed barrel for my T/C Prohunter. Great cartridge, but ammo and properly headstamped brass are very hard to find. Of course, you can resize .308 brass if needed. If you're looking for something a little different you might consider the 260 Remington. It's basically a 6.5-308. Recent experience with a 6.5 Grendel is making me love 6.5 bullets in the 120 grain class. With a 260 Rem you could shoot even heavier bullets. Good luck. |

If I could afford to build such a Rifle I would pick the .338 Federal Hands down without a second thought. But only because I can not really find the needed components to build a .358 Winchester. :) . As I am a HUGE Fan of the .358 Winchester as it can be one Fine Accurate round and for Hunting it hits like the HAMMER of THOR.
But as has been mentioned if you are going to go with a .338 Federal then I would seriously consider reloading due to the availability of ammo. But that depends on your particular area. |

If you like the 358 Winchester I would look at the 358 MGP. Right in the middle of 358 Winchester load velocities, formed with common 6.8 brass, and uses the lighter AR15 platform. http://www.mgpcustoms.com/Load_Data.html
There is a thread in here on it. From what I have seen it is a tack driver. |

As Brass is not a real problem for either the .338 Federal or the .358 Winchester. |
