It looks as though I will be getting a 458 SOCOM upper that I have been lusting for.  I have a RRA lower that I have saved for this upper.  The RRA has a RRA 6 position stock on it.  Will this have any problems with the 458 round.  Most of my shooting will be with the 300g loadings, though I will have to shoot some 600g bullets just for fun.

Appreciate any help in advance

We have varying reports on the use of tele stocks with the SOCOM.  Shivan has been using one without any isses, yet we have heard of others collapsing during shooting.  Most everyone I have spoken to seems to favor the ACE Skeleton stock for feel and fit ....

Big +1 for the ACE Skeleton stock.  That is what i have on my .458 SOCOM.  Next range trip I will be trying out MGI's buffer on it.

If you're going to actually use the upper (like shoot more than 2 shots/year) the stock will break. Get a straight stock or a MagPul.

I ordered one of these yesterday. Looks like it will help with recoil.

Ace Skeleton Stock with a Pachmayr Light Weight 1" Thick Decelerator Butt Pad with Aluminum Plate

Here is the web address for these stocks and butt pads.

Check out their 50BMG uppers too.

It sounds like Ace Skeleton stock it is.

Anyone know of someone using the Ace SOCOM?  Seems very stout.

Thanks for the help

Marty

Have you ever heard of anyone using one of the JP Enterprise brakes on a 458 upper?

Sounds like it works very well and would allow extended shooting sessions, though I am not sure my wallet would

Thanks

You don't really need the JP brake. I shoot mine without a brake, and it doesn't really seem needed. Then again, 30 rounds of .375 H&H is what I consider a fun afternoon. But seriously, the Shrewd brake is probably a better option. Less expensive, probably just as effective. The .458 maxes out around 35k psi, so brakes aren't going to be that effective anyway.

I have all kind of gizmos for the muzzle of my .458 SOCOM upper including the Shrewd brake.  I can tell very little difference between braked and not braked.  I use a ACE M4 SOCOM stock with the one-inch rubber pad on my .458 but the recoil, mild as it is, still caused the stock to strip the locking cone and collapse.  Ace said to lock it in and they sent me a new harder cone.  Since I locked it in position it has been dandy.   If I had known it would collapse the M4 stock I would have gone with the standard fixed Ace skeleton, but alls well that ends well.

Thanks

Up close picture of the Shrewd brake on a .458 SOCOM.  This one was installed on a bead blasted SS Lothar Walther barrel and given some "artistic enhancement"

As DoubleARon and BigBore stated, the brakes are not overly effective due to the low muzzle pressure and large bore.  We did indeed install the JP Recoil Eliminator on one for a customer and even that customer commented that it was not worth the trouble ... that JP now gathers dust in the corner of the shop, as I have no big bore that needs it.... it is opened up to .458 ....

For sale?

Where can I get a shrewd brake or am I better off skipping to the Vortex?

Thanks

It would be for sale, but it is threaded for an unusual pattern and would probably not match the thread on your barrel ....

We have the Shrewd brakes, they require modification from the state in which they are sold to work on the .458 (they arrive in about .30 cal condition).  There are several options, including the Shrewd, the Vortex, the Phantom C5, the LOOOOONG Phantom from DPMS, the Tromix A1, even the OPS Inc 2-Port and the M-60 "Egg Beater".  Just whatever floats your boat or gives you the look you are trying to achieve.  Performance in terms of recoil reduction for all is about the same, flash reduction I have not yet tested ....  My loads all seem to have low flash due to choice of powder .... (H110 seems to flash, whereas Re7 seems low(er) flash)

Thanks Marty

I will send you an email once my upper gets here to order a flash suppressor.  I just dealt for one of your AR15.com group buy uppers that was unfired so I am pretty stoked.

Talk to you soon

Ok

Another question.

I am going to go with the ACE ARFX stock as suggested.  I have an extra AR10 buffer laying around and don't have an AR15 buffer.  Can I use the AR10 buffer?  Seems like the extra mass may help things out to some degree.

Isn't the AR-10 buffer larger in diameter than the AR-15?  Don't have an AR-10 handy here so can't check, but seem to recall something along those lines.  But if it is dimensionally the same as the AR-15, just heavier, sure, go for it
