Hey guys, I'm building a 10.5" .458 SOCOM SBR (stamp is already done and received) and have one small question. I had my upper receiver milled to the correct specs on the ejection port already so I'm good there. But, do I need to modify the feed ramps as well? I am planning on using Tromix for the barrel and the upper I had machined for the .458 is from Aero Precision.
Thanks! |

If you blend the upper to the TROMIX feed ramps you will get smoother feeding and if you plan on shooting wide meplat bullets then blending will help. However, I have 5 AR .458S and some have blended feed ramps and some do not. They all feed just fine so you might want to try it before you start changing things. This is one of the biggest mistakes new to .458 S shooters make, they start changing things before they even find out if things need to be changed. For instance, throwing in HBs and XP springs in there before even shooting and turn what would have been a perfectly fine running rifle into a jam-o-matic.
The ones of mine that are blended are on uppers with the M4 cuts but my first two were done on rifle uppers with rifle barrel extensions so there is nothing really to blend unless I start monkeying with the feed ramp itself which I am not about to do since neither have missed a beat. If you only plan on shooting pointed bullets like the TTSX, TSX, or GMX then you almost certainly will not need to blend, but if you shoot some of the flat nosed hollow points then blending may be helpful IF you find you have a feeding problem. Most do not have problems with any bullet until they get into shooting cast LFN or WFN bullets with wider than normal meplats. |
