I think the 458 SOCOM bolt fits into a standard AR15 bolt carrier.  Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

My real question, however, is what do they use for a barrel extension?  Is it a standard AR15, an AR10, or some custom piece in between?

Thank you for your big-bore wisdom.

There is a lot of knowledge here about the .458, but you might wanna TRY HERE

The .458 SOCOM uses a modified 5.56 mm bolt. The boltface is opened up a little, to fit the .458s larger rim diameter. It works just fine with a regular, bone stock bolt carrier. The barrel extension on my .458 upper is a standard AR15 extension, with a reshaped feedramp in the 6:00 position.

Just because. I heard it uses the .308 bolt but I am most likely wrong.

The bolts are standard 5.56 bolts modified to accept the .308 Win size rim.  They use standard carriers.  The extension is modified as mentioned with one large ramp at 6 instead of the two smaller M-4 ramps.  All parts are fully compatible with standard AR-15s.

My 2 bolts from Tromix started life as a 7.62x39 bolts.  I am guessing since it took the littlest work to complete?

Didn't know the 5.56 bolt would work, I guess I can't see why it wouldn't though......

The .308 bolt would be totally impossible as it is HUGE!

I've used x39 bolts on occassion, but they are more expensive than 556 bolts.  Amount of labor is not that much different ...
