I am getting all my parts lined up and ordered for a pistol build. Can I build a 45acp upper with off the shelf 223 parts, minus the bolt and barrel. Then use the same mag set up that Oly uses in a regular 223 lower. My thought is starting with a 223 upper then changing barrel and bolt for 45. |

Look for Tangochasers post on this subject (He's the Man). OlyArms is the only maker of .45 cal acp uppers or parts. Their barrel and bolt/carrier are proprietary. They are having magazine availability problems. The ejector on this requires either their specific upper receiver or the owner drilling holes in their receiver for the spring ejector assembly. A 45 cal specific lower receiver is offered by Bazooka Brotheres and one soon to be released by Tangochaser; both use M3 greasegun mags. CavArms MKII lowers can accomodate GG mags, but there goes your pistol build. Parts common to .223/5.56 and .45 acp are:Upper receiver (w/ejector mod),Charge Handle, & Carbine length handguards. ... its a short list... buckmeister (luvin' mah 45 AR!) |
You're welcome. The guys (and gals) here are a wealth of knowledge, and willing to share it.
Several vendors here sell OlyArms products (TC's one). I went to OlyArms and paid more than had I gone to a vendor.
If you feel you are up to a little welding and tinkering... cobble yourself a mag. There are variants out there that will hold the .45 round. There was a thread about a mag at Sarco which would hold .45's. Tack on a block or square tube in back and you would have something very close to an Oly mag. By the way... you'll need a second job anyway... to pay for this disease! buckmeister |

I made a .45 upper using a Thompson SMG barrel with a custom barrel extension before. I still had to use the Oly bolt carrier assy. It required the use on a FF HG as the barrel has an unusual taper near where a gas block/sight base would mount. Rhineland Arms sells a .45 barrel for their FAL conversion for $55 that has enough meat on it to turn down and thread to mate with an Oly pistol caliber barrel extension. Oly will sell the extension separately but you have to call and ask. It's not a catalog item. The threads for the barrel on the Oly extension are standard 5.56 barrel thread size. RRA sells a upper receiver for their 9mm that is slick side and would be great for a .45 conversion. No use for the FA anyway. Just drill the holes for the Oly ejector and your in business. |
