I bought a PSA blem lower without much of a plan for it & now I've got a stray hair to build a 5.45.

But I have zero experience with this caliber.

Anything a man should know before taking on a build of this nature?

Anything I ought to do differently to mitigate the corrosive ammo?

Just clean it after shooting and you'll be fine.  I'm toying with this idea but worried about ammo supply in the future.

Don't buy a PSA barrel. Wrong twist.

Thanks for the answers so far, I didn't know that about the PSA barrels & I wondered about the ammo supply too, but its been rumored that there are poop - tons of it in Eastern Europe.

Would it benefit me to use as much chrome lined stuff (like a bolt carrier) as possible?

5.45 uses the same carrier, but a different bolt than 5.56, right?

Would I need new mags or would my 5.56 mags work?

search around in the variants section here.  There have been quiet a few conversations about this just look at the stuff that is already on here.  Ammo may be plentiful there but what you want to ask is if you will be able to get it in bulk imported over here in the future.

I would make the suggestion of buying up a good deal of ammo now.  Go ahead and grab a few thousand rounds.  Get the gun that you want and shoot it to shit.  You will destroy a barrel and some of the components and it is not a big deal.  Re-barrel the upper and keep on running.  The most important thing right now is find a barrel and bolt that work and the rest is really easy.  Look for the pmag mod for them in the link below.  I no longer get specialized mags for them it is too easy to mod for.

Bolt and barrel.  Clean it after you shoot it and just keep on going.  If you have to replace a gas tube or something stupid don't worry about it you will be able to shoot thousands of rounds before that gets to be a real issue.  With mine I take the gun to a garden hose and flush it out after I shoot then clean it like I would clean any other gun I bring home.
thread about 5.45 there are more links on the other pages keep looking around

Start with stocking up on non corrosive ammo (saves time if you dont want to clean right away).  Get a mid lenght  barrel from ballistic advantage, I consider them the best in 5.45 and they will give you an extra powered trigger spring.  Try to get a bolt from a member here. Once you build it stock up on 5.45 surplus (UN gun treaty might get signed by your president).  I recomend a melonite gas tube.

Cleaning is not the thing you should be focused on.  You want to stock up on the best bang for your buck bulk dirty crap.  It is available right now.  It hasn't been available for months before just now.  At 200 or so per 1k it is still a great deal and is still about half the price of 5.56.  Paying more for non corrosive or other perks is pointless.  These are full power training guns much like buying a .22 AR to practice manipulation.

If you are going to get a barrel from BA get it as a group with the bolt face from them.  BA bolts are different.  It is help full to get them together when ever you buy a bolt face and barrel for 5.45.  I have a spikes 5.45 bolt that works great.  I doubt you will find a 5.45 bolt on here for sale and if you do you have to make sure it is the right size for the BA barrel.

If you are not going with a piston the gas tube will not take much of a beating.  Again just flush the gun after use and you are set.  The only reason to put more money into a 5.45 gun is for extras that are not needed.  You can't tell someone about the great money savings you are getting unless you have at least broken even on the cost of the upper and extras.  I would use the cheapest upper I can get my hands on.  I would put on a used for end and parts and share an optic or use very cheap knock off optics that mimic what you use on your 5.56 gun.

Shoot the gun flush out the gun clean the gun pull out the bolt and carry on.

Yes your dead on about the bolt. I purchased mine from someone here who works for Spikes.  Spikes tactical bolts go well with ballistics advantage barrels.  I am not sure but i beleive that the same people that make spikes barrels makes barrels for ballistic advantage.
