I put together a 5.45 upper, A1 receiver on a Calvary Arms lower, I installed an M4 barrel extension on an AK74 barrel, carbine length gas system and the Calvary Arms receiver has the carbine buffer and spring.  When I drilled the hole for the gas block I drilled the same diameter as used on the 5.56.........I opened the bolt face to accept the larger base and for the first few hundred rounds used the standard 5.56 extractor.  It functions well.  I finally received an extractor built for the 5.45 and it functions perfect 90% of the time and then it looses the fired round about 1/2" out of the chamber.  I have changed the spring, I have installed the blue spacer, I have not tried the "O" ring trick yet but I suppose that is next.........the feed and function (using CProducts mags) is perfect.  Any ideas on this extraction issue?.........llc

solved my own problem...............the depth of the bolt face was about .010" shallow, not allowing the extractor to completely fit over the rim of the case........I increased the depth and went to the range............works 100%............llc

Ive been interested in doing a 5.45 build.  How hard was it to install and drill an ak74 barrel for an m4 extension? Do you think you saved money over buying a complete barrel/5.45 assembly?

I did save some dollars.....When I got started with the project the barrels were about $250 but waiting time was forever and it seems no-one was willing to tell me who built the barrel, the twist rate, or the bore diameter and were not chrome lined......also, they were only available in the standard AR contour and I was after something lighter in weight.....I had built numerous Polish Tantal rifles in the 5.45........very accurate, cheap ammo, and the barrels in the GUN THINGS parts were new and chrome lined.  I found a source of "virgin" AK74 barrels......undrilled for gas port and not threaded at the muzzle, chambered and chrome lined.  $35 for the barrel extenstion and extension pin, $150 for the barrel and then my lathe time..........The longest time was spent building the "bushing" I needed to install so I could use a standard .750" front sight base or gas block.........It appears I might save more now as I found a source of US made chrome lined barrels for about $100 and some freight.  That would put actual dollar cost at about $150 (plus your barrel nut and sight block and muzzle brake).......I have built 4 rifles to date.........3 on flat-top.......one on an A1 upper....end result is about a 4.5 lb rifle that is really sweet to shoot..........I built the bolt from an M16 MPC I already had, I modified a standard AR firing pin, the rest is standard AR stuff................llc
