so i posted this in another section, and didn't really get much feedback... 5.45 upper question

big question: what are the different options for 5.45 uppers? all i've seen is the adams arms piston upper and its a bit out of my range, though the parts kit they sell is within my range, and the S&W kit, which i haven't heard much about

if i get the parts from adams arms, what else will i need to make it a full upper?
Are there other 5.45 uppers that are g2g?

Thanks for the help

While I don't have personal experience with the S&W upper, the ARFCOM consensus is that it is good to go.

Here's a video member 87GN did using a S&W M&P15R upper.

Model One Sales also has complete uppers in 5.45, but do a search about them before using a credit card with them.
I am not a S&W rifle fan, I have found several of these rifles and uppers available at the local gunshows lately.
I too have been waiting a while for the right choice. Spikes will soon release a complete 5.45 upper that I have been waiting for, Tom has said will be soon (this has been said for 6+months).
Shaw makes cr-moly barrels for several manufacturers, I believe they may also provide chrome lined bbls also.
I believe I would prefer a nitrided barrel with a plated bolt, kinda like what Spikes will offer eventually.
There is another company offering nitrided barrels also, maybe Ballistic Advantage or something similar- I will look for the info and update this message tomorrow.

UPDATE-> Here are some links from some of the 5.45 options, I did find a site last month with the S&W uppers for $575 and I have found several of those complete uppers for $4-500 at the gunshows. I am (again) not a fan of S&W rifles, so I will pass till I find what I want. Check out these sites, there are links saying beware of Model1 sales use of credit card info. I believe Grant is sold out of the S&W uppers, you might check Aim Surplus. I will wait on the Spikes upper I guess. Here goes:

I ran my 5.45 through a Carbine course today, It wasn't extremely shooting intensive because we were caught in a down pour all morning However, I did get just shy of 500 rounds down range with ZERO problems. Go with a smith, it's a fantastic rifle.

thanks for the replies.  I can see the love for the S&W upper but I'm not a fan of the price. I can see shooting is going to be an expensive hobby haha

How hard is it to build an upper though? what else would i need if i bought the adams arms kit?

Can't remember the cost of barrel and bolt for a 5.45 conversion but figure you can put one together for less than $575.  There's plenty of help on here for building your own upper including some folks that will loan you the tools.
My view of the 5.45 ar is that the magazine is going to be the weakest link.  You should find out what mags the guys reporting good experiences are using and take that into cost considerations.

still need
a carrier = 60 bucks
upper reciever = 110 bucks
handguards = 20 bucks
front sight = 30 bucks
gas tube = 15 bucks
total = 225 plus the 379 = 605
the S&W is a competitive price.
tools to assemble = ?

there is another option
citadel barrel and bolt = 180 bucks
dont know about quality but i just bought one so stay tuned.

I agree with this statement on the magazines. Seems C-products has improved their mags with a new follower, their early mags left room for improvement. I believe they also have toughened up the mag body also. There is room for magpul or others to get in the market to offer mags.
I cannot say the c-product mags are perfect yet, or if they will be the best choice, for now there are not many choices to compare to.
I have been studying these rifles for a while and have been shooting 5.45 ammo in AK74 rifles for years, have seen AK74 barrels used in AR/M receivers and even a AR/M receiver that was modified to use AK mags.
I do want a M4 style rifle in 5.45, I just have not found one I like yet.

If you already had a M4 upper, this $379 package would allow you to disassemble that upper and reinstall these parts. You would then have a running M4 in 5.45. To buy the other needed upper parts and build a working upper would be more expensive than the S&W upper that is already assembled (most likely). You could purchase a DSA ZM4 upper for $275, then use the $379 Adams package, but that would put you over $650.
