Ok so my first post is a question that is hopefully simple and not a stupid one to ask. I was told that the quickest way to tell if a 5.56 round without a green tip is a 62 grain penetrator round is to hold a magnet to the actual bullet. If it sticks it's a 62 grain penetrator (steel underneath) as no 55 grain 5.56 was done factory loaded as penetrator rounds? I did try this on a green tip M855 and it stuck to the magnet while an M193 round did not with both rounds coming from known marked boxes. But what if it's not boxed and say loose bagged? Any truth to this or is it a bunch of hooey?? I read through all the ammo FAQs and while I learned a bunch I couldn't find an answer to this one. Thanks in advance.

Your right. M855 62gr Steel penetrator will stick. M193 55gr won't.  Though there are 62 grain bullets that are not steel core. M855 is always steel penetrator. M193 is never steel penetrator.

Also realize that Russian ammo is almost always a mild steel jacket and will stick no matter what weight.  It's steel cased so its kind of a give away as to it being Russian.

Loose or not you should always know what your shooting. Never mix ammo types.  No one sells ammo in loose packs that's unmarked and/or mixed loadings. If they are do NOT buy from them.

M-193 is your standard lead core bullet. There is no steel.

M-855 has a lead rear core and a steel front core.

Various Russian and other former ComBloc rounds will have steel under the jacket, but do not penetrate better than M-193.
