I have just about finished gathering all the parts for my first AR retro build.
Finally arrived at a color choice for the stocks, and decided to go with the 'flat' for now.
I can satin or semi it later....

The upper needs 3 more modifications to complete the 601 look, and then off to Victor
to be refinished in  NDS's XM gray to match the lower.

The lower will be sent to Orion for engraving.

Of these.

Looking good so far; what do you still have to do to the upper?  it looks like you still need to machine the flash off the inside of the carry handle, and drill the hole for the port door spring (31.5 mm from the back rib, about on the crease), and something else?

I have an original 601 upper on mine, but I'm modifying a 604 upper just for fun.

You might consider using "M16" for your engraving rather than "AR 15", to avoid any trademark issues. Just my 2 cents worth....

On the right side just under the rear hinge for the port cover, a tad of material needs to be removed (arched) from the upper to marry the upper to the lower....
Did I say that right????
Or look at your real 601 upper and you will see what I mean, you can probably say it better than me.
Oh I also had to make my own port door latch to mimic the early 'square' type. That was a pain.......

VAAR can you give them measeurement for the port door spring hole. How far it is from theejection port and from one of the sides. I am convertinga fulton upper to 601 configuration and need that info as well.

Nice looking rifle...

Is that charging handle an original, or did you modify an A1/2 CH to the 601 style???

It is 31.5 mm from the back rib, about on the crease.  I don't know the bit size, I just used one just a tad wider than the spring.  BTW, it goes all the way through the upper...

nice windage wheel.
I'm not expert, and it is hard to get colors to come out over the internet sometimes, but I don't like the green.
However the build it really cool. Not just one color but the different shades of grey from the upper to the lower makes it.

Thanks ...The windage wheel is from Jerrell (heartbeat), I got a handfull of stuff from him all very nice, you cant go wrong with him.

Sorry about the color...I did the only thing I could do and followed some suggestions about the ammo can color, so me and a can went to Home Depot , and consorted with the paint Lady there. This is what we came up with. Digital color seems to shift greatly in varying lite.
The picture below is inside with early morning sun. If it is completely wrong someone let me know. I have nothing to compare it to 'cept pictures here on the forum.

Thanks for looking.

Did in miss this: is that a 601 upper or are you modifying a 604. You rear of the upper looks as if you have squared it off but the windage arrow on the upper is gone. Did you file that off and paint over? If so did you blast the area to blend it, because it does not look like it was ever there.
