The ad states "....the receiver has a unique serial number..." I think there is more to it than just "AR". Look close at the last picture.

Let us know what he wants for it, just for curiosity's sake.

I wonder why the hole for the receiver extension pin is drilled on the right side, but not the left. Is that common to see that? I haven't seen many pics of a 601, thats why I asked.

The number is blocked for security. +1 let us know the price when you find out.
I say $27,000
What's your guess?

With their prices on M16s...I'm guessing somewhere around $35k

If I lived in a Free State I would Jump on it for that price!
I'll bet he is asking more.

Was probably a left over lower, so they made up a serial number for it.

The hole is drilled after the receiver extension is installed.  So apparently this one was never built.

Howdy, Price is 14.5K.  I have seen some VERY nice full auto m-16's for around the same price as this stripped lower.  So why would you pay 25k+?

You show me a REAL 601 for $14,500, and Ill show you the entire ARFCOM forum pulling out second mortgages.
The M16's you have seen for that price are probably 604's

Honestly, that is a pretty good price.

Well, I thought 601's were cheaper then 604's?  Machine gun buyers like the mag fence and all that modern stuff.

601s used to be the only auto Minnesotans could buy since it is a C&R.  I think they've relaxed their rules recently and allowed more autos in.  Any factory Colt should bring $12-$13k.

He's right, and as always, people will pay the most for the things that are hardest to get in any given category.  In the case of Class 3 items, the most uncommon early variants and also the newest M-16 types are the most expensive.  Certain early variants, like the Colt 605 and (original) XM-177 variants are very rare and valuable.  The Colt M-16A2 sells for much, much more than a 601.  Anything with US Property markings is worth a minimum of $4k more than an identical unmarked rifle.

The 601 is somewhat common (relatively speaking) in terms of transferable M-16 types, judging by its presence on the Subguns and Sturmgewehr boards.  Also, the Class 3 collector who would be willing to pay a premium for a 601 would want one that is all-original.  That includes original bolt catch, front pivot pin, and those other parts that can be next to impossible to locate.  A 601 receiver built up "as close as possible" will still sell for less than an all-original M-16A1.  Some would view such a rifle rather unaffectionately as "a parts rifle with a funky front pivot pin" at that point.  It seems a lot of those who invest in Class 3 items are more of the "investor" type than the "builder" type as most of us are on this forum.

I stand corrected. Perhaps I should be shopping for 601s. I do want a  few class IIIs and the 601 is definately one of them. I have the bolt catch, mag button, duckbill, and buffer. Will it be more economical to build or buy complete?

It's Michigan that relaxed its NFA rules. Minnesota is still C&R only full auto. The 601's are made from a less durable metal. Specialized Armament Warehouse talked me out of making a 9MM subgun. Said the blowback system is more abusive to the internals in the lower. I took his advise.
