Does it have the rear sight assembly, forward assist. And port door? If so are those painted? If so, completely strip the upper and remove the small parts. They sell numerous paint strippers that won't affect the original finish.

I usually spray them down with Birchwood-Casey Gun Scrubber and take some super fine steel wool and try to remove the paint that way. Sometimes, the paint was on for so long, I had to carefully scrape the paint off with a razor blade. Another method is to use a brass wire wheel on a rotary tool. This has worked for me too. There may be better solvents to remove the paint and not affect the original finish. I am sure that someone will come along with a better idea than what I have done. I did recently remove black paint that was on the upper of my Rubber Duck.

Now with a real forward assist:

If you need to remove any type of paint, use MEK.
You may need to soak it for a few hours, but paint will come off with only minor 'tooth-brushing'.
If that doesn't work, it might be something other than just paint.

I've had good luck with this.  It is expensive but cheap stuff is cheap for a reason.

Can you post a picture of it?  Sometimes you can tell by the way it chipps / scratches off (if it has any chips or scratches) if it is likely to come off with stripper.
