The fact that I can not find a 601 upper has made me think I could convert a 604 to look more like a 601 upper. If I am correct all that needs to be done is sand off the l-R and replace the windage wheel and get it refinished by US anodizing.

Is there something else I would need  to do to make it look like a 601 that I am missing.

Also do you think there would be enough material left to do the same thing to the Windage drum? Ten get it engraved to look lik an original?

You need the beveling at the rear of the receiver for the triangular charging handle.

See flat edges on 601 receiver on the left...

Thanks for the info uxb, I was thinking of doing something similar myself in one of the projects to come.

That would not be so bad as long as there is enough meat on the 604 upper to work with. I may need to borrow a mill for a day.

uxb you wouldn't happen to know the rough mesurements?

You would also need to smooth out the forging flash inside the carry handle, to be more correct.

On my 601 upper the area below the lower left corner of the ejection port is cut to match up with the raised portion on the lower.

I have also seen some 604's with this feature, but most 604's don't.

Use an early 604 upper that is straight (not curved) in front of the ejection port.
I'll see if I can find pics of what I mean.

does the 602 upper differ much from the 601?

im trying to put together a 602. the upper i have has the profile under the door to match the lower. it does not have the cutouts for the triangular charge handle. it also has casting marks in the carry handle.

just looking to see which features to look for on the 602 upper.

I recall when I was selling uppers I had some A1 uppers that also had that beveling at the back.  I can't remember, but I don't think they were Colt...

cocktailer,
is the bottom picture a 601 or 604?
I have a upper with those marks and the straight lines by the ejector on it. But it has the raised R and arrow on the windage

A couple of pictures showing the lack of forging flash on my 601 receiver.

The camera flash made the color of the receiver lighter than it actually is. The actual color of my receiver looks like UXB's.

That receiver's beautiful, man. Much nicer looking than mine. I see you have the early rear wheel drum too. Is that one you got from the GB auctions?

Sure is, best $55 I've ever spent! Still wish I'd of bought your barrel. Then my 601 would be done now.

The bottom one is a 601. Its the only pic I could find to show what I meant.  Early 604 forgings have the same straight feature.

There must have been a transition period for some 601 to 602 parts. The 602 upper I have is a 601 upper (angled CH area, no forge flash under carry handle), but has engraved arrow and R by a sight drum with numbers. I'll bet when the 601 parts ran out the standard 602 upper is what you have if yours has the engraved arrow and R.
I'm sure an expert will be along soon with the answer.  Sorry no pictures right now.

THis looks a tad bit more complicated. Mya return for search of a 601 upper. To bad Mike hasn't made a retro 601 upper. (hint hint)

I would recommend you buy a 601 upper if you find one.
