I need to open up the gas port on my 605. It was a Colt SP1 barrel cut down for a 605. Gas port wasn't opened up and it's basically a single shot rifle right now.
Looking at the archives it looks like .110" is a good size. That requires the #35 drill bit. I looked and it appears the 20" gas port can range from .086" to .093". Question is do I need to gradually move up in drill bit size? Or can I got from a #42 (factory gas port size) to a #35? If I do need to gradually move up do I go one at a time or can i skip a few at a time? What's the risk of going straight to the #35? I will be able to clamp the barrel down and use a drill press so I'm not freehanding it. |

You can do it in one shot if you take your time and use plenty of lubricant. Be careful you don't go thru the one side and into the other....Yes it happens. thanks. i've had a drill bit go through the threaded portion one time when trying to blind pin a flash hider. pricey lesson. had to get that barrel cut, rethreaded and a longer muzzle attachment permanently attached. |
| I do them in one step to .110. Actually I drill them a bit under and ream to .110 but drilling is fine. I only ever had one that would not run at .110. That one had to go to .120 and still did not work until the gas tube hole was matched to the gasport hole in the FSB. Needless to say I was getting a bit nervous but it wasn't over gassed and worked fine when finished. |
