I've been looking at doing a 605 build because why not.
For those that have built one does the barrel need to have the flash hider pinned and welded to make it look correct with the lock washer flush against the FSB? Or can the barrel be cut to 16" with the threads being the part that hits 16"? I've seen pictures that show the flash hider a half inch away from the FSB but I'm not sure if that is because of the need to get to 16" or if thats just how that specific barrel was. Thanks |

Thought I would repurpose this thread, since it is about 605-ness.
If I was using one of THESE - the dissy barrel in the middle, as the starting point of a 605 upper; Just curious about a couple of things. How is the FSB pinned to the barrel? I am guessing there is a wide journal under, fsb, and hoping it is .625. Any idea if the gas block innterferes with triangular HGs? And, depending on that forthcoming information, what would be the best way to make a 605 out of one? Could anyone see paying to have the extra 3/4 or so cut off and pinning a FH and washer ? Not sure I want to go that route, after waiting all this time, and having a kind of crusty barrel set aside. But a new faster twist might work better than an older C MP Chrome Bore. And a dissy would not have the dwell issues of a cut down rifle length. But its like I need to be talked into it. |

You mention a crusty barrel - I was going to use a Dissy setup for all the reasons you mention - then I picked up a 604 upper off the EE for $210 shipped. The receiver was great, but the barrel looked like it'd been sitting in a ship's bilge for 20 years:
The front sight was completely rusted.
I decided it would make the perfect 605, since I didn't have much $ at the time. After Heatnbeat got done with it:
The thing is unbelievably accurate, and I have yet to have a failure. Admittedly, I haven't shot it in cold weather yet, but extraction and performance has been beautiful. It is the most accurate AR I've ever had. So - you might want to rethink the dissy thing and just go with a classic rifle gas 605. It will save you a lot of pissing around trying to make the gas block fit under the HGs too. I am a believer! |
| Excellent reading and pictures guys. I have a non chrome chamber/bore 20" pencil barrel I'll be chopping to 15" (open gas port .110) and having JT pin the 3 prong flash hider. Morg, I like your duck bill on the end. Were some early 605's in that configuration or your call? Thx. |

The gasblock does get in the way but only barely, you need to cut the heatshields to make them fit right. I believe it was Morg who sent me a set already modded for the dissy barrel. I went this route first as well until I did a real 605 build..... |

Yeah, I see something that looks like a great deal for a new barrel and I'm all ready to jump. Glad I posted this and got all of your replies. Hopefully soon I will send the old barrel to JT, maybe with some other projects, and let him work his magic. I also like that duckbill on yours, Morg. Wonder how chopping 4" off can make it more accurate, but there may be a good explanation for that. Some say that 16" is an ideal barrel.
Thanks for the responses |
That was my call. Originally it was going to be a BTDT "early 605 prototype" akin to John Thomas's amazing town bicycle build 601 - just chopped. I have no doubt the first 605 may have actually been a 601 or 602 - but unfortunately, by the time Heatnbeat got through with it, it was too nice to distress. LOL. He's a good guy - I just find it kinda funny, truthfully. My next project is a proto carbine, but I'm not going to talk about it - it's going to be a little weird. |
