Wow that looks nice! I don't know if I envy that barrel though! My 18" with a barrel light that is really front heavy. ![]() Thanks! Ya ive got a 16" dissipator heavy barrel on another rifle. I think it's around 2lb... This dwarfs that. I'm guessing it's 4 to 5 pounds. |

Outstanding job and attention to detail!! Question about the finishing: Was your 80% lower bare aluminum? Did you Parkerize first and then coat it with Norrells? It was bare metal and then sprayed with norrells. I've done all of them this way. I'd say it's not as durable As anodizing but norrells is pretty tuff . I can save 300$ A project by using norrells so it's too cost effective for me not to use . |

Looks great! I'm a Norrells fan as well. I have finally settled on 310 degrees for 70 minutes and it has been giving me nice results and authentic color with the grayish/black . Nice. I'll try that on the next one. On this one I did the lower at 300 for a hour, and the upper At 350 for a hour. It came out with a nice greenish tint. The camera made it look like night and day but it's really pretty subtle |

Nice Build, Were did you get the bipod? i got it from a guy on the M14 forum. That's a good place to start if you need one. Mine is a Springfield reproduction . So it's middle of the road. Originally are a bit more scarce and expensive and there Are cheap reproduction also. The M14 site has some good info on the differences |

At least not on one I'd want/have to carry around. If we want to figure out the weight more closely, I could make a quick SolidWorks model, set the material properties, and check. Then again, not sure I'd want to know! ---Edit--- Or I could just look at RRA's website. In the "Heavy Barrel" Assembly section 20 Inch Standard Stainless Steel Barrel Assembly
With bayonet lug, threaded, 1/2-28 thread. Weight 58 ounces So 3.625lbs. |

I bought one of those uppers from a guy who bought a bunch of stuff at the colt bankruptcy sale. How much do you think the upper with bipod is worth? It came with a spare barrel. Barrel is so big the hand guards barely fit around it. Wow, where were you when I was barrel shopping I'm not sure what a factory upper would run... Can't remember the last time I've seen one For sale. But I'd guess 800$ and up? |

I got a 14.5 pencil upper, a slickslide 1:12 and what he called a light machine gun upper which is like what you have pictured with the M-14 style bipod. He had about 25 barrels and uppers for sale on the same post. |

That looks great! Congrats I saw a real one of those the other day at a museum on Fort Leanord Wood. It was tucked into a dark corner, pics came out like crap. Nice. I don't think I've ever seen a real one. I might be traveling to Florida in June So I'm hoping to find a way into Reed knights museum too see the real deal |

That turned out very nice. Should be a great shooter. Thank you very much for sharing through out the build process also.
Last authentic 606 uppers I saw were $600 less bipod from supposedly ex-Colt employee ( salesman) and I was advised here in retroland by a few oldsters not to buy as that was way too much. Times sure did change. Still a few regrets from time to time but I would have kept at least one of them if purchased. At the time excellent condition LW Colt assembled retro uppers were $250 -275ish. Seller did let me read his 1965 Colt sales catalog which I've never seen another. Wasn't all that, only a few pages but it had pics and specs and pricing for all the available CAR-15 models including belt fed. All I remember was pricing was almost unelieveably cheap. I had to be very careful with it but it was a treat and retro cool. Seller said he also had a couple in 1-14 twist but I never saw them. The one's I saw were 12 stamped HBar, didn't know to look between FSB or put magnet to gas tube but pretty sure they were original and very nice like unfired. General retroland consensus at the time was they were possibly used for initial trials but never confirmed if they actually even existed. Those were the one's I wanted though. Kept $2K in my pocket for about a year and hit every funshow as they were promised to me but never hooked up. Seller had a stroke and I lost contact. Would almost like to know Mr. Knights thoughts on 1-14 twist 606 as I have most every one else's thoughts from that era. I did purchase a load of NOS Colt small parts from him back when they were 1/2 the price of every thing else and not 5X. It appeared that Colt owed him some coins when let go and he may have taken a few liberties. Also passed on a box of at least 25 606 white buffers at $8.00ea all new in wrap for some NOS wine colored pieces for $10ea. Realized my error and immediately went back to table only to watch some lucky soul shelling out the coins and he wouldn't even sell me one of them. I honestly didn't know what they were at the time but knew I wanted one about 50 ft away and did an immediate 180. Seller didn't know what he had either when I initially inquired about them. Just some NSN marked clear plastic sealed bags with white plastic rifle buffers inside. Figured it out when I read / saw www. retroblackrifle pics. So I know the buffers are out there somewhere and probably not too far from VA probably waiting to appreciate to edgewater coins. Lot less of those than edgewater's for sure. Those were only two times I even saw any authentic 606 pieces besides in collection pics. A couple very nice display clones locally but I've never fired them. Basically NDS lowers and some TLC. |

Don't worry, Trimdad, in a few more years, you'll be talking about the amazing deals you were getting back then (now). . . Great looking build, btw! Thanks. Ya I already caught myself the other day - " damn... I remember when stripped uppers were 75$ to 100$ bucks!" |
