I've heard it was Fiberglass!

I have no idea.
But I assume it was aluminum.
There isn't much clearance for fiberglass where the gas tube resides.
It is awfully thin in that area.

In one of the pictures on RBR you can see a cross weave pattern in the handguard. I could be wrong?!?

I think that is actually from the paper the photo was scanned from.
Anyone able to sneek into Reed Knight's gunroom and take a look?

here's a pic of a 608 HG I've saved... I always liked the pic, but don't know if it's good enough to be able to tell what the the HG is made from. I always thought it was aluminum though

My assumption is aluminum as well... if the 608 was designed to be put in the seat kit of an ejection seat, I think they would have went with the stronger material (aluminum) to help ensure the forarm's survival during the ejection sequence.

I've been measuring parts to see about making a couple 608 HGs and it almost has to be aluminum because there is just about no room under it for the gas tube. If you look at a slip ring there is only about .020 - .025 between the gas tube and the slip ring, not enough for a composit HG.

Could the slip ring be modified for more clearance?

Looks like aluminum with finish wear to me.

you would probably not be able to modify a stock slip ring enough to gain clearance...you could have a larger diameter ring made though

these were made by different members here, so a custom diameter ring shouldn't be that much of a stretch for some of the more talented guys on here to do for ya'

I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but on a stock 608 HG, the front cap is of a larger diameter than a normal round handguard cap as well

so your talking about a custom slip ring, HG tube and, front cap.

I think if I was serious about doing a 608, I'd look into using sheet metal for the HG and only make the custom front cap and tube. Remember this was a survival rifle, not meant for a high volume of fire. I think they came packed with only 3 20 round mags.

I was going to get a steel freeze plug for a motor and use that for the front cap.
