Using iron sights, I shot at 50 and 100 yards today.  I shot BHA 77 grain OTM (5.56).  My group at 100 yards was about 5-6 inches round.  They averaged about 3 inches high and pretty much perfect for windage.  I am very new to the AR world, so I am satisfied with these results today.  All of the holes in the targets were round, so I would say that the 1/7 twist did its job.  I have shot 55 and 77 grainers so far.  I plan to use the 77 gr OTM's for HD.  Would I be better off with a red dot optic for HD, or would you guys suggest iron sights for in home distances?  The next time that I go to the range, I want to see how accurate it is to just use the front sight up close.  It works great for my Glock.  I am new with the rifle, so I don't know if it works with an AR.  Any suggustions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I prefer Aimpoint sights, though Eotech makes a good product as well.  The reticle of the Eotech works good in home defense situations due to the large 65MOA circle around the 1MOA dot.  Either would work well for you.  I have a light on my HD M4 as well.

So does the eotech make for a better sight picture for HD?

If you reload barnes makes a 70 grain bullet that could be good for home defense.. they shoot great out of my 6940.

Hmmm... that's a bit subjective. Like the other guy said above, you've got the "doughnut of death" that makes for easy target acquisition with the EoTech and none of the tunnel vision that some complain about with the Aimpoint. The tradeoff being that the battery life of the EoTech sucks compared to an Aimpoint. You can basically leave the Aimpoint on constantly with very little worry about the battery. You'll just have to make sure you can turn on the EoTech quickly, so practice with it if that's the route you go. And get a weapon light either way.

I keep an Aimpoint on my 6920 and its always on.  And the battery lasts an extremely long time.  I'd say its better for your sight to be on and ready to go when you are.

EOTech battery life is 1100 hours, plenty for a home defense weapon. Aimpoint has about 5 years. You'll see both in use by military, so they are both sturdy. It will come down to personal choice.

The best thing to do is try both. Talk to others at the range and most will let you try something they have if you ask nicely. I prefer the Eotech recticle for home defense situations. The 65 MOA is very quick compared to finding a 2 or 4 MOA dot when you first wake up in the middle of the night. I highly suggest a good light and sling. Slings are a personal choice, I prefer the 2 point and the VTAC padded is my sling of choice. For a light on a budget get a older Surefire 6P and toss the lamp and replace it with a Malkoff lamp. If budget is higher the ElZetta M60 is the best light I have used today, and I have some expensive lights. Mounts are a personal choice. I prefer the 6 o' clock position and the ElZetta 1500 light mount but YMMV?
