Maybe I'm not using the search feature correctly, but I'm trying to find out what is the best type of comp. to use for target shooting with a 18" SS barrel. I'm new to the 6.8 world so please forgive my ignorance. Keep in mind that i live in NY so no Flash Hiders... comps only.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the most ideal would be an 11° target crown, but i haven't seen any out there. I know i could send it to ADCO to cut, but i don't think i want to do that.

Thank you in advance,
-Pete

What barrel do you have?  It may already have an 11 degree crown.  Here is a comparison chart for comps, scroll down the page.  Keep in mind that the best comp(Titan as an example) for recoil/muzzle rise will also be the loudest.  That's not important for competition or private property but may cause some tension with the shooters next to you on a public range.  If you didn't know you most likely have 5/8-24 threads and need to order a 6.8 or 7.62 comp.  Most companies have one specifically for 6.8 now.

No barrel yet. I'm in the middle of a build. I was looking at a Wilson Combat 18" fluted SS. It has a threaded end, but no info on thread pitch. I sent an email to Wilson to find out more info. Typically I want a 20" bbl with a target crown, but i haven't seen one yet.

ETA: My Bushy has a loud comp and it's damn near impossible to sit next to that thing at the range. I'm pretty courteous to other shooters, so i usually wait for them to finish before i pull that one out.

With all of that in mind I'd suggest the ITS 8 port in the link I posted.  They are highly recommended over at 68forums.com.  The ports are threaded so you can adjust it to suit your needs, just add or remove the plugs.

Bison Armory has a 20", and will put a 11 degree crown on for you The gas system can be either rifle or intermeditate. I would suggest that you check the 68forum.com.

ARPerformance has some excellent Comps for the AR's. I would also look at D9firearms.com. They have their Linear Comp that is an all SS Comp that is very nice and tapers down to most SS barrels so that it looks like it's part of the barrel. I got one for my 6.8 build and I think they make them for 5.56 too. It's a little bit more $$ but it sure is worth it. Basically , just find and re-search the Comp you want and buy it.

Heres what I have and love it.  Keeps muzzle jump down without blowing out the ears of bystanders.

Sorry didn't see you already mentioned it.

Without a doubt, the Battle Comp BABC is the best 6.8 mm compensator we have used for real world shooting.  I have been running Battle Comp's since they were in the prototype phase––I was initially skeptical as I generally hate muzzle brakes.  After shooting them hard indoors, including full-auto out of SBR's, I became convinced of their effectiveness.  At about 43-50 sec on this video, I shoot a full mag dump out of an M4 equipped with a Battle Comp, notice the lack of muzzle climb:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...ZQQA&feature=related.  We have the Levangs on some 10.5" guns––like a KX3, they work well at directing the blast forward, but have a fair amount of flash; Battle Comp offers far superior muzzle rise reduction. We have also been trying the Black River Tactical muzzle devices––they seem to work as well or perhaps a bit better than the Levangs and KX3's at directing blast forward, but again do not offer the recoil mitigation of the Battle Comp.  The Battle Comp works as advertised––flash is about the same as an A2, muzzle rise is substantially mitigated, concussion is no more severe than on an A2 type flash hider. What is there not to like?
