Quick question, is there any difference between a 6.8  Buffer / buffer spring and a .223 Buffer / buffer spring ? Ive got a DPMS 6.8 lower and i want to use a .223 upper on it and im not sure if the buffer spring and the buffer its self are different from the .223 buffer spring and buffer. Appreciatethe input! -josh

Thanks for the input, im asking because i broke a buffer retainer and im not sure if it was because the spring was too stout for it.

The spring should not break the buffer retainer.
Is the head of the buffer beat up from the retainer hitting it when it is fired ?

If it is then you have a problem more serious than a stiff spring.

The buffer has a couple marks on it but not alot, and its kind of hard to tell if the marks are form the retainer. What kind of problem do you think i have, what would be causing this?

If the head of the buffer is not beat up then I have no idea.

A while back I had one gun that the buffer head was chewed up bad by the retainer.
I was told the hole for the retainer was drilled too far back and this caused the forward motion of
the buffer to be stopped by the retainer every time it was fired rather than the bolt carrier.
The buffer is supposed to only touch the retainer when you open of the gun.

Check the underside of your carrier to be sure there isn't something in the grove.  The buffer retaining pin rides in this grove when the action cycles.  Unlikely, but something else to check to be sure.
