I currently own a BM .223 AR, is it possible for me to convert my .223 to 6.8 by just buying a 6.8 barrel? Or would I have to buy a new bolt, and an upper receiver. I was hoping I could get away with just a new barrel for now. Any advice is appreciated!

You'll need the new 6.8 barrel and bolt.. plus however many 6.8 spc magazines you figure you'll need.

Having M4 feed ramps cut into the upper receiver and barrel are preferable. That said, it almost makes sense to keep the 5.56 upper as is to use it as a back up should you ever need it..  or just sell it.

If you're trying keep the up front expense of switching over to a minimum. You could take the handguard/rail system and sights off the 5.56 and transfer them to the 6.8. I wouldn't build a 6.8 without M4 feed ramps though. When shopping around.. look for mid length gas systems as they seem to be the best bet too.

ETA..  Ko-Tonics a forum vendor has 6.8 barrels that they are letting go for a excellent price. They seem to be a big hit latley. With the savings you might be able to swing a new upper reciever too.

Agree with him.

Just build the upper for 6.8 and keep the 5.56. It ain't cheap to shoot 6.8, everything locally is at minimum $15/20 rnds.

Shooting it is worth the money. It is a fun round and the best money I ever spent building it.
