| Can I build a 6.8 SPC on a standard AR lower reciever? If so, does it also take a standard FCG? My brother wants one and I was thinking about putting together one of my stripped lowers for him for X-mas. Thanks guys. |
| Yeah, absolutely you can. The only components that are different are the barrel, bolt, and mag like Warhog said. The 6.8 is a beast. I finished my build a few months ago and I love it. The only drawback that I have found is that ammo is EXPENSIVE!!! It's not 50 BMG or .338 Lapua expensive, but $1.00/round is about as cheap as I can find ammo. So if you don't plan to reload thats something to consider. I'm posting from my phone, but I'll try to put up some pics of my 6.8 later. |

6.8SPC IS NOT "expensive" compared to other commercially loaded cartridges in the AR. It's generally the same, and that means a box of Remington 115 OTP runs $17.99 at Academy, and just down the shelf, .30-30 Leverevolution runs $24.99. In fact, google up precision loads in 5.56, and they aren't cheap, either. SSA7 0gr TSX BT's run $27.83 a box of 20, plus shipping (Fed Ex mandatory.) So, enough about "expensive" 6.8.
Taxpayer supported military surplus is what throws everyone in a tizzy. Of course it's cheap, millions of rounds a year are made, and the tooling is guaranteed to be paid off handsomely. If we were still making the 62 Galaxie with 292 for 45 years, it would be pretty cheap, too. Unfortunately, the public is fickle, rarely sticks to any new cartridge - unless it's proving itself. There's about 45 cartridges you can get in the AR - 5.56 is about the ONLY "cheap" one. 6.8 shooters weren't looking for cheap, 5.56 and .22 Long Rifle have that nailed down. 6.8 is chosen because it has 40% more power downrange than 5.56. It carries more footpounds of force to penetrate and cause shock. I was trying to demonstrate that to myself today, had a deer in the scope. The happy 6.8 shooters use it on live game, if dirt or paper is the target, it won't be economically justifiable compared to 5.56 or 7.62x39. Very few others would be, either. There's a purpose to the design of alternate calibers, and what they are meant to do better is entirely the point. |

Great points. 5.56 or .223 ammo is about the only thing you can get that cheap (talking centerfire). Can't compare a non-military caliber cartridge like 6.8 that isn't made in such huge quantity. 6.8 is made to squeeze every bit of knockdown power out of the AR-15 platform without requiring a longer chambered weapon (like the AR-10 platform). It's a shame our military didn't give the 6.8 a more serious look...seems like a lot of potential. I love the idea of the 6.8 and am a big fan, but most of my shooting is target or plinking...so I've gone with 5.56 on everything so far. On the off chance I want to hunt, I guess I can buy $1/round ammo (5.56 pressure 77 grain BTHP), but I still know I'm giving up a lot of knockdown power versus the 6.8. I guess that's the beauty of the AR platform..you can always get a 6.8 upper. |

Nice bed rat. Is the 6.8 a variant? |
