I am a new member to the forum, and am fairly new to gun ownership (roughly 1 year) so excuse if I dont exactly have all of the "terminology" down lol... anyway, I bought a 5.56 AR a while back, and I love it.. lately I've been thinking about getting a 6.8 upper though.. I just wanted to know, are there any drawbacks to adding the upper to my current AR platform, as opposed to buying a full 6.8? I know that the rounds arent exactly cheap, but Is 6.8 definitely worth it over 7.62x39? And lastly, I havent found much info on any 6.8 makers.. aside from RRA and Bison Armory when I do a basic google search on "6.8spc upper" lol ... is bison armory a good choice or could anyone give suggestions for others? My uses would be hunting, fun/paper punching, and defense..
Side note, I've seen a few links posted on other threads with similar questions, to ar15performance.com... but probably due to ignorance on my part, I cant seem to navigate the damn page and find the specific upper that I assume it was intended to lead to... |

68forums is a good place to start. But sounds to me like you have been doing a little research.
As to your questions, there is no danger in putting a 6.8 upper on the rifle you already have. Bison makes good ones. ARP (ar15performance) is probably the best barrel maker for the 6.8 and has a great rep. His stuff goes quick though. The differences in 5.56 and 6.8 are the barrel, the bolt (you can use a 5.56 carrier) and the mags. You might would need a buffer change since most 6.8s are mid length instead of carbine. You might want to search the EE, you can find some already complete 6.8 uppers (new and used) and perhaps that is the way for you to go. If you get a barrel from ARP, go ahead and get their superbolt. H makes sure the headspace is correct for the bolt and barrel combo. I am working on a 6.8 myself and would be happy to answer any other ?'s you have, just IM me. |
| I can tell you I have built 3 6.8 rifles using ar15performance.com or ARP barrels. Yesterday was the third. The first 8 rounds out of the barrel went into the size of a quarter in a 25 mph cross wind. We were close enough didn't bother to dial in the scope as we ended up having 10 6.8 rounds on hand and did not realize it. Ran out of time. The other ARP barrels are just as good. The other two are 18" yesterday built a 20". I highly recommend ARP. I am sure there are others that perform similarly. I have no experience with others. ARP is awesome in my book. |
