I want to start hunting with my AR next year and was thinking of getting a 6.8 upper to do this with. What upper would be better a 20" or 16". I want this to be light weight but have good accuracy and punch out to 300 yards. Not sure what length to go with on that. I mostly hunt mulies and its pretty wide open where I hunt. Went this year here in SD and I got wore out spotting and stalking with my '06. In TX I hunt in a blind. Though it would be fun to build a 6.8 and use it. I already have 2 AR's and one is a carbine and other is a 20". I would really rather not hunt mulies with a 223 or I would just use what I have. Want the bigger round. Thanks for the help. H. |

16" is all you need. People have taken deer out to 300' with 10.5 barrels in 6.8. The 6.8 is a very efficient round, so it doesn't need longer barrels. I would look at a 16" KT barrels by Ko-Tonics or one of Denny's Recon barrels. I have one of these and while it does have the SAAMI chamber I can shoot anything that can be loaded for the 6.8 and its very accurate. It can shoot .5 moa with quite a few factory loads and go sub .5 with hand loads. The KT barrel has all the +s in one barrel. SPCII chamber, 11:1 twist, 4 groove, and chrome lined. It has no problem getting sub moa groups from most factory ammo - Remington and can get .5 moa with a few and handloads. You wouldn't be disappointed with either IMO. You will appreciate that shorter barrel when trekking through the brush or going long distances. and you have all you need to take game out to any reasonable distance. Tim |

Thanks Tim. That's what I was thinking looking at the ballistics on most of the factory rounds. I was hoping that some one would pipe in on the 16". That's what I was leaning towards. I can't find a light weight barrel in 20". I think the 16 will do well. Just wanted some advice from the experts.

The Ko-Tonics barrel has all the +s in one barrel. SPCII chamber, 11:1 twist, 4 groove, and chrome lined -TW Yep...the 16" light wt. is the way to go..imo You can order an upper off KTs website or send in the parts of your own choosing and Ko-Tonics will build it for you... KT also Ceracotes and can get your barrel Ionbond coated... Given the light wt profile...the SPC II chamber the 1 in 11 twist 4 groove and Cr lined...there's just no contest here IMO |
