OK, I've been reading these threads until my head spins. This is what I have. It's a lower that has the RRA trigger in it. I have a spare M-16 style bolt carrier. If I add the MGI 7.62x39 bolt and firing pin to my carrier, coupled with my trigger, will this build be reliable? I don't want to mod anything on a brand new upper. I'm just trying to figure out if I can put an upper together and have it fire all types of ammo. Like my lowly Mini-30 will do. If I have to use the AR-15 style trigger with a heavy hammer spring, I'm not sure I will go this route. I hate crappy triggers. But I hate unreliability even more. Any replies would be appreciated. |

Sounds good. Some 7.62x39 users have installed a Wolf hammer spring for $5.00, besides the commercial and home made bolt and firng pin mods, with good results for tough primered ammo. Others have installed heavier buffers and springs on lowers, to control possible bolt bounce, recoil, and control the rate of fire. Others have used stock equipment, with just a 7.62x39 bolt change with good results. I don't know the round count on this configuration, as a whole. It would be nice, but I have my doubts for the long run. The MGI bolt was designed for the 7.62x39 and not a reworked 5.56x45 bolt design. I am looking at this bolt myself. MGI also makes the carrier as you know, but it is another $125.00, still? I currently have a DPMS bolt, with no problems. But they have a reported history of breakage, in the higher round counts. I installed a heavier buffer and spring, hoping this might help to extend the DPMS bolt life, a little. Who knows? I like the 7.62x39 in the AR15. But it is not the original AR15 caliber design, so some parts may need beefing up. Kind of in between the .308 and the 5.56. Try it and see how it performs for yourself. I think you are ahead of the game, with the MGI bolt and firing pin. Don't forget, though helpful, this is still the internet. |

I wonder what the difference is between the MGI carrier and a stock carrier? MGI says it's for ARs that use AK-47 type mags. My plan is to use the C Products 10 rounders. That's really all I need for fun. Right now I don't have any Wolf ammo. Couple thousand rounds of the copper washed stuff in the sardine cans and a 1000 round count in a heavy plastic bag that looks to be lacquer coated. Got this stuff years ago. But when I run out... Other than the reliability problems, my main concern is my RRA trigger. Hoping to hear of anybody that has tried that trigger in their gun. I was hoping to hear that the MGI bolt and firing pin coupled with this trigger would be reliable. |
| I have a Del-Ton build and have replaced the hammer spring with the Wolff extra strength spring and just got the MGI bolt and firing pin yesterday. Have installed both and am going to the range in the morning. Will let you know how this works with East German, Wolf, and Chinese 7.62X39 ammo. |

That's one thing I don't understand. The MGI carrier for the AR doesn't make sense to me. And the others, like Tim43, are putting heavier hammer springs in. I don't want to do that. If I have to put up with a crappy trigger, I'll just stick to the Mini-30. At least when I pull that crappy trigger, it fires every time. |

I'll probably give this setup a try. If worse comes to worse, I'll buy another lower, add the crappy trigger, and dedicate it just to this gun. Something I'm trying to avoid. Then if I can make it reliable, sell the Mini. But right now my credit card had been hacked somewhere. Gotta get that straightened out before I think about using the new one online. Jeeze, this is the 4th time I've been hacked. |

Oh, I forgot to ask. Is there any certain color of "animal" ammo that I should stay away from? Is some better than others? Or is it the case of buy it and try it? From what I understand, it will all run in the Rusky type guns. Not so sure about the AR platforms. Oh, and I was on the C Products website. Didn't see the 10 round mags for sale. Model 1 has PRI mags. Are those any good? |
| As far as ammo goes, it's pretty hit and miss, depending on your particular rifle/mag combo. I have a MGI upper and lower, and have a large stock of S&B (very reliable but hard to find now) and Wolf Mil Classic stuff. I had serious issues with the Wolf stuff until I installed the MGI bolt and pin. |

I sent a request in to MGI, but that was Friday night. Probably won't hear anything from them until this week. Same with the C Products 10 round mags. Looking to go with the Model 1 A3 upper with a 16" barrel and free float tube with the steel gas block. Jeeze, I haven't had time to work up a good load for the last AR I built a couple of months ago. And I have a DPMS LR-308B on order. I'll be busy this fall when the farm work slows down. This is the gun I plan to stick the upper on: Last Years Build Click on a pic to make it bigger, then click on original at the top to blow it up. |
