I am looking into building a 7.62x39 AR to add to my variant collection.
Besides the Bolt, Barrel, and magazine what else needs to be modified? Can you use a standard AR15 Forged upper or does the ejection door need to be milled out? |
|
Standard upper is fine.
Just make sure you get the right bore diameter for your intended ammo consumption, and get quality parts for your operating system that are meant to work together. There are all kinds of issues with firing pin depth, bolt strength, gas port diameter, magazines, feed ramps... I would avoid the Model 1 Sales bolts like the plague, and would want the strongest bolt I could find. There are very few companies that have cracked the 7.62x39 AR code, and it's one of the most treacherous builds when you do it yourself if you frankengun it. |

|
YHM barrels are GTG.
I would try and find an Armalite, ARP or LMT bolt if possible, and if not there is a new place making a high strength one. ASC magazines have been flawless for me. A chrome-steel flat wire buffer spring can help with feeding. Geissele triggers with an enhanced firing pin will allow reliable ignition. Stick with FMJ or ballistic tip ammunition, soft points work ok.... But hollow points can hang up. Your upper-barrel extension feed ramp transition needs to be smooth. Golden Tiger, Prvi, and other higher powered ammunition work best. |

Could you explain to this AR 762x39 noobie builder what can go wrong? I purchased a Surplus Ammo and Arms 16" heavy barrel and condidered their bolt, but haven't bought it yet. I have a Double Star gas block also on hand. TIA. |
| Bolts and mags are your hitch points. Use C Defense Products 28-round mags. The ASCs I bought will hold 20 fine but won't load to 30 reliably for me. The issue with bolts is breakage due to the thinner material by the lugs. I'm using an enhanced bolt and firing pin from Cason Engineering. Great bolt very sturdy with no extractor issues. No issues with light strikes either even without the extra power springs. |

I have only about 2500 rounds down range with it. |

just built my first
after a couple trips to the range and some mods I have it working 100% it's great fun...more oomph than 5.56 and cheaper too! boughtthis barrel...great price and the accuracy has been fantastic! |

I have two rifles in this caliber and love them Mine are both YHM one factory built and one parts built . I have had exactly on fail to feed in 1500+ rounds. using ASC mags. |
