I am contemplating a new build, I have put together a couple M16A2ish ARs that turned out nice (both with 20" barrels), but now would like something in the larger 7.62x39.  It seems like the standard barrel length for this caliber is 16" vs 20".  There are some decent looking complete uppers on gunbroker, but they all seem to have the 16" barrel.  Is there any particular reason for this?  I have always preferred longer barrels, will the performance at 16" be enough that I should not care?

As I understand a 20" 7.62x39 barrel offers very little if anything at all over a 16". Don't quote me on this, but I am pretty sure I read that on here. I've built all of mine at 16" or less. I have done between 15-20 7.62x39 uppers since March/April. They are great!

From everything I've read, not having tested it myself, the above poster is correct. There is so little velocity gain from going 16 to 20 inch that most people aren't interested in a 20 inch barrel. Its something like 100fps gain with combloc ammo.
