8" in .300 Blackout is what I did for my latest build. I used a POF Dictator adjustable gas block so I can turn off the gas for subsonics. I also have a 7.5" 5.56 and 8.5" 7.62x39mm that I built in the past. 7.62x39mm made a lot of sense when imported ammo was cheap and .300 BO was expensive. Even 7.62x39mm subsonic started being imported right before they cut off imports. I got into 7.62x39mm pretty heavily from back in the AK days, rifles & ammo were cheap. But now that .300 Blackout is nearly the same money and 7.62x39mm subsonic is way more money, .300 makes more sense to me. Particularly when you bring a suppressor into the story. As mentioned above, I would not do a 13" 5.56 as you are so close to a pin/welded 13.9" rifle. Go short if you are doing a pistol. Do a 11.5" if you are going 5.56. I love 7.62x39mm but I've been shooting it since the early 1990's. Chinese ammo was $2 for a box of 20rds. Now my summer job in high school only paid $4 an hour, but that got me 2x boxes. Cheap ammo and a $90 SKS was the hot ticket for me in high school. Colt AR-15s were $750. So because of my nostalgia for 7.62x39mm, I still have several pistols & rifles in that caliber. I have a PSA KS-47 pistol and PTR-32PDW that I really like. It helps that I have cases of 7.62x39mm in my fort. What sucks it I think about how much money it would cost to replace it and get hesitant to let it fly like the good old days. |

First question: Do you reload? If you do, 300 BO, no question. If not, then 556 will be cheaper to shoot. If performance is your game and suppressed, and less worry on ammo cost, then 300 BO again, without question. I know peeps love their shorty 556's, but it's a personal thing I guess. I see no practical purpose for losing all that velocity with a tiny bullet by going that short and still having the sonic crack even with a suppressor. |

I have a 12.5" 5.56 and bunch of 8"ish 300blks. (Not an 8", but a 7.5", an 8.3", an 8.5", a 9", ect...) Both of them are excellent options. Just depends on your needs. With that said, I prefer 300blk as an AR pistol if you trying to go short. 110gr round at 2100 fps = 1077 ft/lb of energy 115gr round at 2050 fps = 1073 ft/lb of energy PSA sells their AAC 110gr Sabre Black tips for $0.65/rnd.
