I am running a RRA 9mm upper with a permanent Hahn block and the Hahn Sub Caliber buffer that I got in a trade.

It ran OK for about 300 rounds then it bent the Bolt Catch.  The Hahn Sub Caliber buffer allows the bolt to travel further back that It needs to, and the extra play was slowing pounding my bolt catch to death.  I have been running this gun without the bolt catch for a while, and just haven't gotten around to fixing it.  I know I can fix this problem with a spikes buffer, but I would rather work with what I have on hand.

Anyway, this week I received a parts order from RRA that I placed a while back and had forgotten about, a couple LPK and some other stuff, I didn't remember ordering this thing but now that it is here I think I should be able to easily modify it to take up a little space in the buffer tube to fix my over travel problem.  The spacer is made of nylon and I should be able to chop up the the correct size. (labeled 9mm stock spacer in the pic, the dumb looking white thing)

My only question is how much play should the bolt have rearward after the bolt catch??  When i put this plastic spacer in the buffer tube and then put the buffer in, it doesn't travel far enough back to catch a new round from the mag and load it.  Before I go hacking this plastic spacer in half with a saw so it goes far enough backwards for the gun to function it would be nice to know the optimum travel beyond the magazine the bolt should travel, then i should be able to figure out how much of this thing I can cut away.  I hope this makes sense
Thanks

It only needs enough extra travel to let the catch rise in front of the bolt-a millimeter at most.  Some people put quarters in the receiver extension tube (sometimes quite a few!), while others find that plastic adapters or blocks do the trick.
