After six months of waiting, I finally got the Form 1’s back.  My two 9mm AR’s are finished.  The information found on AR15.com was a big help.

The first one is pretty standard:  Dedicated 9mm lower, Colt style magazines, short barrel, etc. With the straight Colt magazine, kind of reminds me of a Thompson SMG.

I went a different way with the second one and modified the lower receiver to use Sterling SMG 34 round magazines.  I like the way it turned out.  I documented the process along the way.

Very informative write up on converting the lower and Sterling mags.  I wouldn't mind converting an extra lower I have laying around but converting the mags so they wouldn't work in my Sterling is a deal breaker unfortunately...maybe I'll change my mind in the future.

Very good job, I commend you for , like me, not being afraid to work on your own guns, I have been for over 25 years. Great write up & how to photos, I have been kicking around in my head converting an ar to accept mp5 mags but now QC10 beat me to it, so I'll see how theirs comes out.  A way to get cheap practice for anyone thinking about this would be by a couple of cheap pro mag 9mm blocks and mod them. Before ya go near the $200.00  lower, I'm still looking at different way to make a mag block accept uzi mags, since I cant find a vm hytech and I have a bunch of uzi mags I want to use unmodified.
PS: they do look better then colt mags.

Nice write up. I'm a fan of the sterling and recently picked up a parts kit to build. I wonder if you could do something similar with a Flat Spot steel AR weld-it-yourself lower kit and graft a sterling magwell into it.

I'd like to try and integrate a helical magazine into some type of compact pistol caliber carbine...maybe even a bullpup.

Booger-hooker:  Thanks for the positive comment.  I bought a bunch of Sterling magazines from Apex and 44MAG.com when I first got my gun.  Also got a few from gunshows.  My plan is to initially convert a few to use in the AR and if it works out well and it becomes “The Favorite”, convert a few more down the road.

JimmyNY:  Thanks for the comments.   I really enjoy working doing my own work too.  It never occurred to me to modify a mag block first.  Makes sense.

Free-fly:  Thanks for the comments.  I’ve never heard of Flat Spot Steel AR weld-it-yourself lower kit.  I went to their website and checked it out - $28!!  I think your idea has some real potential.  I already have a Sterling parts kit.  Bought it after I bought the Wiselite/Sterling Carbine.  I laid my Sterling magwell piece  on top of an AR lower.   I didn’t do any detailed measuring but I think it could be done – an AR that could use unmodified Sterling magazines.  OR would it be possible to make an insertable magazine block from the Sterling magwell?  Something to think about.  Winters coming and I need indoor projects to keep me busy.
