So I have a dream build in mind for either my next build or possibly the one after that.  I would like to build a 9 mm SBR with suppressor.  Would I have to pay two tax stamps or could I get both the SBR and silencer on the same form?  Also, is it even feasible to build your own 9mm upper or would I be better off buying an off-the-shelf SBR upper?

Two stamps unless you permanently attach the suppressor so the barrel length is over 16".  Yes you can build your own.

That's highway robbery, it is!  Four-hundred wing-wangs on top of having to pay for a suppressor?!?  Thanks for the info.

I've scanned the pistol caliber forum and all I saw in there was people who bought pre-made uppers.  Has anyone here in the BIY forum built their own 9mm - SBR or otherwise?  How did you do it/what parts did you use/where did you find them?

I am in the process of doing it.  I picked up a 10.5" RRA 9mm upper and I will probably be cutting it down to 5.5 or so.  I will be using a YHM can on it

I do not have one but was looking at building a 9mm upper for several months. I did a lot of research into it. From what I found/read ...building a 9mm upper is easier then a 5.56 upper. On a 9mm build there is no gas tube. Biggest thing is making sure you have the right hammer for the bolt you are using which is not hard. If you can build a 5.56 upper then you can do a 9mm upper.

Edit––and yes you have to get a tax stamp for the SBR and a stamp for the suppressor. Yes $400 more on top of the gun.

I'm in the process of building one right now.  I'm planning on getting the Forms submitted here pretty soon so they'll hopefully be approved by the time I get back from deployment.

I used a RRA stripped 9mm upper, Spike's 7.5" barrel, Spike's 9mm A2 FH, CMMG enhanced/ramped BCG, Troy TRX rail, Magpul MBUS and a charging handle with tac-latch that I had laying around.

I've got a mag block for the registered SBR pictured there, and if/when my dedicated 9mm lower gets here it will be assembled as a pistol while I submit my SBR paperwork for that lower as well.

I don't have a 9mm can... yet. I currently have two cans (.22LR and 5.56) in process, but 9mm is next on the list.

SBR the rifle first. Then save your pennies, and buy the can. $400 is a lot of money, but you gotta pay to play. :(

Makes you sorta wish you lived in a free country, doesn't it?
