I want to replace the buffer spring in my Colt 9mm AR15. My question is will any ar15 buffer spring work or is there a specific one just for the 9mm calibre?

thanks

I run std. carbine buffer springs in mine - nothing special.  I get them from Brownells in 3 packs.

I'm curious why you want to replace the buffer spring?

A heavier spring will slow the bolt opening.

Which will reduce felt recoil amongst other things.  I have a Wolff Extra power spring in my AR 9mm pistol and it's great!  Everyone that tries charging it comments on how much harder it is to do so than a standard carbine spring.  Recoil is very tame, even with +p stuff.  I really noticed a difference when I stepped to the Wolff over the standard carbine unit.

It could also prevent proper functioning with lower powered ammo.  It could also cause the bolt/heavy buffer to slam closed harder than it needs to which can disrupt the "feel" of the gun (sight picture) when shooting.

It is better to try and tune the gun to the loads you will be shooting most - lots of variables can come into the mix.  There isn't really a "magic" set-up that works best for every set-up.  For a heavy diet of +P, extra heavy buffers and springs may prove beneficial, but it may not work as well for -P loads.

Wolf xp spring and a Slash 9Q heavy 9mm buffer.........reduced recoil, less blow back, and works like a charm!

I want to replace the spring since this was an ex-PD carbine from a SWAT team up north. The carbine saw heavy use and I have already broken one bolt catch since I have owned it. Thanks for the replies.

You probably already know what you are doing, so I'll just mention this for someone else's benefit in case they search for "broken bolt catch" and stumble upon this thread.

Replacing the spring alone may not do much to prevent a broken bolt catch - this is where the 9mm specialty/longer buffers or a spacer help.

Good luck.
