Hi all,

I am about to build an upper in 9mm but have a few questions, I intend to make the upper from billet to match my lower, but I want to a few thing different, here goes.

1: Top mounted recoil spring like a HK or a couple of other ar conversions I have seen, this will allow a wider selection of stock,(folding, etc) to be used.  I AM NOT IN THE USA.

2: Side mounted folding cocking lever like a FN FAL, non reciprocating if I can on the LHS or reciprocating in the RHS. this will allow me to do away with the cocking handle and stop some gas coming back into the shooters face.

I plan on building another lower like the one pictured but so it will accept Sten or Glock 17 mags,
Any tips on top mounted recoild designs outthere or traps to look out for would be good.

thankshttp://www.carringtonequip.com/images/1087965730-LHS.jpg

I have never personally seen the kind of upper you are looking to make but I think ZM Weapon systems and Olympic both make something along that line.

Olympic has some kind of system to take Glock mags, again I have not seen it.

This is a very interesting question.  A 9mm upper would not need gas as it would just be plain blow back with the bolt/spring handling the recoil.  So you can use any design you want in your custom upper as long as the bolt can push back a spring.  The spring can be behind or on top of the bolt.  You can use a telescoping bolt like on the Uzi, MAC, or FMK and a rear spring would be compact.  A top mounted spring would be most compact but the rear of the bolt would have to be attached to some telescoping tubes thatcompresses the spring during recoil.  Think along the lines of the HK upper but inside the spring would be the tubes.
Also, there is an article in a magazine (whose name I can't remember now) of someone that attached a Sten style tube onto an M16 lower.  If you can get Sten parts, this might be the easiest route.  The bolt travel on a Sten is short due to it's weight and the bolt can be turned to feed from the AR mag well.  This would give you bottom feeding with Sten mags, left side cocking, and top ejection; basically everything you want.
