I'm interested in building a 9mm AR.  I've seen different manufactures that use different magazines.  Which set-ups work the best? Sten mag/uzi/Colt? I can always modify a preban upper for legality, so that's not an issue. Thanks for any info.

What do the SOCOM blocks go for?  And...will they work on a RRA 9mm upper?

BTT 'cause I don't know the answer to this one and I'm curious as well about the 9mm RRA's.

The SOCOM block was designed to work with the Oly system so you don't need that welded on modification on the back of the sten mag. You buy one SOCOM block and you can use stock sten mags. The RRA 9mm was designed around the Colt system which requires a magwell adapter and uses the expensive Colt 9mm mags (They activate the bolt-hold-open after the last shot) or less expensive Uzi mags that will need to be modified. IMHO it all boils down to what manufacturer you like. I bought the RRA upper for $365, a magwell adapter for $120 and a 9mm hammer for $15 from sable. I got a bunch of used Uzi mags from DSA that cost $11 each. I modified the mags myself. If you are not going to run full-auto you don't need to change the buffer. I think the Oly uppers run $500 - $550 and come with one modified sten mag so they both run around the same price to get started.  I kind of got involved in a sten mag project for the Colt system and have gone 100% to stens - but - this is still a project in the works and my not be for everyone.
