What does it look like and how does it differ from the A2?

A1 - i think there are 5 notches to adjust elevation as compared to the 4 on an A2 post, also think that the A1 top is rounded, rather than squared on the A2; just going by what I've read here

Thanks.  Why the switch to the A2 square notch?

Depending on lighting conditions or glare, the square edges tend to give a crisper sight picture and was included as part of the M16A1s 'upgrade' to A2.

Once the square profile was adopted, the 5 adjustment positions had to be reduced to 4 to maintain a clean sight picture. One complete turn of the front post still resulted in a 5MOA change of elevation (thread pitch is the same), but the 4 possible positions of the A2 divided that into 1.25MOA adjustments instead of the A1s smaller 1MOA adjustments.
