So, I can't seem to get to the bottom of what this means.  How would it differ from a non A2?

There are 3 main types, A1, A2, and A3.

A1 - windage only adjustable rear sight

A2 - windage AND elevation adjustable rear sight

A3 & A4 - Flat top recievers. Removable carry handle. The exact designation used varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Top to bottom: A3/A4, A2, A1

When someone is talking about a complete upper and are referring to profile they are referring to barrel profile IMO.

A1 is .625 or thereabouts the length of the barrel.
A2 is .750 at and forward of the front sight, and tapers to .625 under the hand guards.
HBAR is .750 and larger the length of the barrel.

That's what I was referring to. Barrel profile. Do they make any difference really?

The difference in weight between a .750 gov't profile and a.750 HBAR is very noticeable.  The heavy barrel by itself weighs as much as the gov't profile barrel and upper receiver combined.
