I want to build an "Early A2" now i havent done alot of research yet, but i believe they were anodized gray also?

Basically what are the features for an early..(80's) M16A2.

If you can help me ide really appreciate it

Where else but the RETRO Forum will you find this info.  If I can remember in 87 at MCRD San Diego, our M16A2 was almost brand new and they seemed black to me. A pic I have is this from 89 and 90, same M16A2 w/203. Now looking at a close up it does look grey. Edited several times looking at different pics.

Just about the only feature that's different about an early A2 than a current is the large round forward assist.  I remember the rifle assigned to my tank having that.

An interesting A2 clone would be to use a NoDak A1 lower and have a cartouche with 'burst' machined in where the 'auto' should be then refinish in black.  My unit had two Hydramatic M16A2's made this way.

Who's got pics of a re-mark?

If I were going to build an early A2, I would look at the M16A1E1.
I'd love to build one of those.
But I think I'd have to try drilling the rear site hole.
It is similar to the early A2s:

I have built an M16A1E1 type on an NDS-16A1 lower.

When I found an NOS A2 upper that was gray I had to build it...............................

Couldn't bring myself to drill the hole in the back though

I"ll post pics later.

ETA: we had lots of re-built A1's with A2 uppers on them in the Mn. National Guard.

Here's some A2 prototypes:

Final prototype I believe:

Here are some in a well used gray finish:

Here's the pics. I tried to replicate the top one in Scooby's pic.

I used an A1flash hider and big head FA.

Still need to refinsh the charging handle to gray.

And I have pretty much quit using A2 length stocks on my rifles, they just don't feel right.

I don't know...anymore I'm starting to think we should include the A2 in the Retro fold. It makes sense to me.

A limerick;

Ah the lonely A2

It had nowhere to go and nothing to do

For the Marines they called it the "musket",  the Army had the M4 so they chucked it

So alone it sat, for it's top was not flat, and even the retro guys said f*ck it.........................

Well the A2 may not be retro, but there is an HBAR on Retro Black Rifle now.
The A2 might be getting close.

LMFAO...

I think it's time to officially add the M-16A2 and AR-15A2 to the retro zone.  After all, every other forum points out the lack of rails and the too long length...

And TBH, the A2 or even an A4 would be better off with a 1/9 twist A1 barrel...

[#24]
Here's my M16A1E1. I don't have the skills to drill the rear sight hole myself, and I haven't found anyone to do it for me. There was also some discussion about whether the A1 barrel was proper or not - I may switch it to a government profile sooner or later.

I don't think anyone can argue that the A1E1 is retro. I'm almost convinced that the classic A2 is retro by itself.

Haha! That's a brand new A1 barrel. Still hasn't been fired yet. I was planning on switching the barrel for a gov't profile and then using the A1 barrel to build an A1... I think that'd be acceptable, right?

I wish I did.
I consider the M16A1E1 to be retro.
I've thought about creating a section on the M16A1E1 on Retro Black Rifle.
But I have a lot of other retros to take care of first.
M231, 633, 635 are a few that come to mind.

I do get requests occasionally to add A2s to Retro Black Rifle, but the time involved puts them at the bottom of my list for now.
I don't think it will make it there...but the M16A1E1 might.
It is still partially retro.

Here's a little advice: if you see "A2""retro" in the thread forum title, don't click post it. Really not that difficult.

There, fixed it for you.  So how long has it been (maybe something like 4-6 months or so) since we had yet another vote and once again, the A2 was not considered retro.  Maybe you can call for yet another vote and perhaps this time the camel can get a little more than just his nose into the tent.  Another option would be to lobby for a separate forum that caters to the A2s rather than cluttering up the retro forum with non-retro threads.  BTW, yes, I own 2 A2s but there is no way I consider them retro or worthy of a post in this forum as this is the RETRO forum.

AFSOC_COP,
Most people in here agree that the A2 is not retro, however there is a wealth of knowledge in here. If someone has questions about Colt AR-15 history, the answers are known by some of the members of the Retro Forum.

I don't believe an occasional question about A2 history, or examples of clones built to honor that history offend the members in here.

If you are not going to contribute to the discussion, then stay out of the thread.

If you have issues with this forum you may use the "report" button, or PM me directly. Don't post GD arguements in our forum again.

I apologize for editing everyone's posts, but I wanted to keep the text on topic.

In a lot of ways the A2 rifle was a return to 2 of the early AR10 features;

round handguards

and a rear sight with a knurled wheel that comes up through the upper for elevation changes

I had to go back & check to be sure I was still in the Retro Forum, with all the Moderator edits & all.

What did I miss?

For the OP, the earliest Colt A2 HGs were made out of the same material as the CAR HG's, & took a shine like the CAR's too. So you may need a set of them. IIRC there is some in the EE.

Thanks hk45 . i kinda feel like a lame duck still asking questions about this but... were the early buttstocks matte like they are now? it seems like the A2 buttstock material would never get shiney, or did they use A1 Type E buttstocks with the trap door on the early ones? also i would asume A1 PG.

I don't know if you have the book "Black Rifle II" or not, but on page 2 there's a picture showing 3 employees holding a M16A1E1. It has a A1 grip, the shiny HGs I mentioned earlier, the stock looks like a matte stock (can't tell if it's A1 or A2). The barrel appears to be either Govt. profile or HBAR, cause the muzzle end looks to be the same size as the FH. It also has a teardrop forward assist, & a Delta ring (instead of flat slip ring). A1 lower too.

I'd scan the pic, but I don't have a scanner. Maybe some one with the book & a scanner could do it?

Generally, the butt swivel on an A2 stock is farther to the rear than an A1.

Another telltale is the rounded edges of the A1 style buttplate.
