I just completed my second lower build this weekend. seems like things went by faster and easier than my first build. On my first build, I used a 4 position stock - everything went on good, no problems.Decided that on the second lower, I'd use a regular A2 buttstock. This build, however, I think something is not right. I used the aluminum spacer for the buffer tube and the correct "long" buttstock screw. But my issue is, it seems like the spacer is rattling inside the stock. I've tightened the screw as far as it will go, but I can still hear the spacer rattle from inside the buttstock. Another issue, even though I've tightened the buttstock screw, I can still wiggle the stock a little bit from side to side? Could it be that the tube is out of spec? What can I do about this spacer? Is it ok the way it is? thanks in advance |
I forgot if the spacer is aluminum or plastic. I was a the a gun show this weekend and the vendor I bought it from said it was a DPMS aluminum spacer. It could very well be plastic. |

Is the buffer out of the rifle when it is making the rattling noise? I just want to make sure that's not what you are mistaking the sound for... Are you saying the stock twists a little along the tube axis? If the stock is flush with the receiver, I would think that would indicate either the locating "nub" is too small, or the receiver's nub cutout is too large. |
Yes, the buffer along with the spring is out of the tube. The only source of the rattle is from the end of the tube/spacer area. You can hear and kind of feel the spacer rattle from inside the stock. Maybe I could shim the tube/spacer with a washer to make up for the extra space.
Yes, the stock wiggles a little bit along the tube axis. I haven't thought about the little nub.  I'll take the stock apart again and see if the receiver's nub is cut out correctly. |
YEA!!!!!  I found out the hard way. After work, I went home to take the stock apart to see if it was not tight enough or if the little nub was out of spec. Needless to say, the screw would not turn -- the only thing that turned was the acutal tube itself (i didn't locktite the tube to the lower yet). I did get the screw out, but the tube was ruined. Oh wells, I'll just try another buffer tube and see if that will take care of the rattling and movements.
