What brand scope mount would you recommend for mounting a 4x16 scope ona A3 Flat-top?  I would prefer one that doesn't cost a 1/4 of what the rifle costs.  Thank you in advance for your opinion.

Rings directly on the rail. Simple and low to the bore.

Rings on the rail can be effective, but may not give the forward offset needed for eye relief on a magnified scope.  Illuminated scopes are particularly problematic as they have longer eyepieces than many non-illuminated scopes.

Also, ARs need the scope mounted higher than traditional rifles, due to the ergonomics, so the traditional goal of getting as low to the bore as possible doesn't apply.  You'll typically want rings with a centerline height around the same as the iron sights, which is 1.4" above the rail.  This reduces the selection of rings considerably.

Here's the Big List of AR15 one-piece mounts, including a section on rings and extended rails:

I was thinking of going with this riser mount from Yankee Hill Mount and a set of Burris Signature Zee high rings witha a Mueller 8.5-25x44 or a Mueller 4.5-14x40 scope.  What do you think of this combo?  I'm also going to go look at the list posted.  thanks!

That's a good riser for the money - YHM makes quality gear.  The only cautions:

- It won't give a whole lot of extra forward offset, which the Muellers tend to need due to the long illuminated eyepiece.  Whether this will matter for you depends on shooting style and where you like the eyepiece to fall relative to the charging handle.

- It may not leave enough room behind the mount for a BUIS, if you're planning on using one.

I haven't used this rail, so I can't say for sure on these.  I have the YHM-9474 rail extension, which can give a lot more forward offset and leaves a lot of the rail free, at the cost of grabbing less real estate on the rail for stability.  Mine's been fine, though.

Here's an example of a long eyepiece illuminated scope (the DMS-1) mounted on the YHM-9474, about as far forward as is practical on an AR.  You can see the eyepiece is just a little forward of the charging handle, which is how I need mine mounted.  The YHM-227A wouldn't give as much forward offset, so it'll depend on where you need it mounted.

This is what I went with:

I picked this up for $19.95 at my local gun shop!
Leapers Accushot Picatinny/Weaver 1” Bi-directional Offset Optimum Profile Mount RGWMOFS38-25H4

At Opticsplanet it's on sale for $12.94 ! ! ! Oh well, the gun shops gotta make money too.

This mount works great. Now I want a QD  mount

Does the YHM-9474 rail extension raise the scope like the other YHM riser that I posted?

thanks for the opticplanet link, looks like some nice things.

Looks like it will, but you likely won't get as much forward extension as you would in comparison to the one 'maxicon' posted.

Your pic looks more 'rock solid' but you'd be surpirsedhow solid mounts are even though they aren't clamped as far apart.

RandyStacyE,  are you saying in your opinion that the Optics Planet mount is rock solid?  That was my only concern as the rings seem really close together.

That is a good question. It does lock to the rail EXTREMELY solid and grasps the scope like the best of them. The rings do seem a bit close together ... I agree 100%.

I take very good care of my weapons so I never intentionally abuse them. I'd have to say that the width of the rings is the only weak link. I honestly have no idea what would happen if I were running and fell down on the weapon. If the scope can take the beating then everything should be just fine. If the scope can't take the beating then it just can't and I'm screwed. It's my intention to replace it eventually, but it has served its purpose.

I wanted a 1-piece mount and I found one that works well CHEAP. It works for target shooters, varminting, etc... If I knew I were going into battle then I would prefer a bullet-proof model. If you have a nice scope ... good advice would be to get a decent mount.

My wife tells me I'm a cheapskate, but she doesn't like it when I spend a lot either

Hey Sims5,

I ran across this link several weeks ago and saved it to help me (and others) out....

http://www.maxicon.com/guns/optics/one_piece/ar15_onepiece_mounts.htm

Personally I liked the Rock River mount but, I would NOT recommend trying to order the 30mm one (which is what I needed).  Two weeks after placing my order, wondering where it was, I finally got a call from them today and learned they never HAD the 30mm in stock and it's on "indefinate backorder" with no ETA.  They DO have the 1" ones....roughly $55 including shipping.

I ended up ordering a Model 1 Systems mount this afternoon from Midwayusa.com (roughly $65 vs. $75 if I had bought it directly from Model 1).

Hope this helps!
