I read, researched and begged for the answer to that question. The real answer is (drum roll)....

"the one you prefer".

I know it is not much help and everytime I read that I scoffed....but there really is no 'perfect' one.

I will share my thoughts on how I decided to end up with the 31F.....please don't take it as the "right" information as it is only meant to share MY method of narrowing it down to one. They are all great products and truly at the top of the game for what they do.

I first went to a shop that sells both the compact and full sized. I had already ruled out the non-BAC versions since I plan on using it as a dual purpose optic (CQB and ranged optic). So the TA01 and TA01-NSN models were out.

The shop I went to had 4x, 3x compact, 2x compact. I had them mount several onto a flat top and discovered my first major piece of information. The eye relief listed is NOT, I repeat NOT, the last word on the matter.

I can see 1.5" on a 4x relating to the optimal distance to use it as a 4x optic but I was very well able to use it as a CQB optic with a normal cheel weld (appx 3" off the optic). The 31F (chevron) popped out and was crisp and sharp and VERY easy to pick up. It was easily my favorite reticle.

The triangle was close but just seemed to lack a degree of definition and clarity that I liked in the chevron. The reticle is a very subjective part of the process. Some would argue that part of the triangle could block a portion of the target at longer distances. This may or may not be totally accurate since the center of the triangle is appx 200 yard mark and even at 300 the base of the triangle only covers the width of a human target. I think at this point the optic is capable of out performing most shooters.

The response to that is that the triangle is easier to pick up for CQB. I can say this is not accurate for me but may be for someone else. A bright red anything superimposed on something is visible regardless of shape. It is something that is not normally there....so you will pick it up....especially since the difference in the surface area of the triangle versus the chevron is basically negligible.

The crosshair reticle was VERY tough for me to pick up CQB style and the amber totally washed out. Again, don't throw rocks...just my experience.

As for the 4x vs 3x vs 2x this was my thought process:

Once I knew the eye relief was fine for CQB on 4x....the longer eye relief for the 2x was a non-benefit so I was not willing to give up 50% of my magnification for eye relief I didn't need. As for weight / size you need to see one in person, if you have not already. I was pleasantly surprised by how light and compact the 31 series was....the compacts were almost 'too small' for my tastes.

The 3x gave no more eye relief than the 4x, narrower field of view and less magnification. The only reason for going this route would be size/weight or cost.

As for cost, there are many good dealers on this board selling these FAR below suggested retail so you just can't get hurt no matter which you buy. There are also many great used deals in the equip exchange. There is a 31A (triangle) WITH Larue mount for $800 shipped.......a 31F (chevron) from a well known trusted moderator in the WTT section that he offered a great deal on.

Bottom line......

DO get an ACOG
DON'T rely on any suggestions / advice until you see them first hand for yourself.

This is a high dollar decision that is, overall, a very subjective process. You will be happiest with the ACOG that works best for you.

Hope this was helpful!

What did you think of the TA11 and TA31? Those are the two I'm leaning towards. Just waiting for a good enough deal in the EE.

The TA31 is more popular than the TA11.  But I like the TA31A with the triangle.  To me the ACGOS is one of the best scopes you can use for an AR15.  What every one you get you will love it.

We are offering great prices on the TA31, TA31A, and the TA31F’s.  They are all in stock and ready to ship!

I liked the TA11 ALOT. I wish it was just a bit smaller and lighter. The eye relief was optimal...seemed more forgiving thatn even the 31F, which as I said was perfectly fine. They offer the same reticles etc. They are L-O-N-G across the flat top though.

The TA31 has all the same great features of the 31F but I just do not like the donut. For CQB it may be even better than the chevron (by a hair) but as soon as you use it for any distance it is just not "sharp" enough...imho. It is designed to be zero'd at 100 yds at the top of the donut. At 200 for the center and 300 at the bottom. As small at the reticles are in real life....the top of a circle is kinda hard to be really precise.

I didn't shoot these so it may be easier than they seemed but snipers use crosshairs for a reason....the donught and triangle just seemed.....well "soft".

Not to beat a dead horse but I have to say again, I just can't see someone going wrong with any of these optics. If you try it and like it...it is the right one. If you don't have a shop in your area to touch/feel em....go to the hometown forum here and see if you can find any members with one in your area.

EDIT: Oh and again, support the dealers that support this site. They offer the best prices you will find anywhere anyway (Teknic, CS, C4...just to anme a few)!
