I am getting ready to buy a TA33.  I have used a compact 2x in amber in the past and liked the color.  It seemed brighter than my TA11.  Every one here seems to like red.  Am I missing something?  I am in the NE and won't be using the scope in the sand but will be in the snow.  Any opinions on which one to get?

I've always liked the amber.  Never tried the red as I do not see that color as well. Of course ymmv but my TA33 is amber.  Also, going from just a plain amber dot on my 2X compact to the TA33 took me some time to get used to.  I still prefer a plain dot for my purposes and that would include Eotechs as well.

Amber may be visually brighter, but the red has better contrast to most everything you will be looking at. So even if you feel the red isnt as bright, you will likely pick it up quicker because it has greater contrast than amber in almost any environment.

In color, amber is closer to white snow, closer to green grass, closer to tan sand, grey buildings, brown bark or green leaves. Etc, etc. Red stands out better against all of these and about any other backdrop you can think of.

I have the amber TA33 and like it better than the red.  My somewhat color blind eyes have a hard time picking up the red chevron when looking through the sight.  I also do not seem to have the problem differentiating the amber chevron from sand, dirt, trees, buildings, snow etc.  I think I read somewhere that 1 in 10 guys have some level of color vision problems.  I know that I do and my eyes tend to see shading better than non colorblind people.  If I remember correctly, they used colorblind guys in WW2(?) to find camouflaged positions during aerial recon because the colorblind guys could see the contrasting shades better thus picking out the camo'ed positions easier.

I guess in a round a bout way I am telling you to use what works best for your eyes and not follow what everyone else says is best.

I prefer Amber in all of our scopes.

My first ACOG was amber.
I have read all the reasons why amber is better,
and remember enough of physics class to understand why.

A couple years later I came across a good deal on a red one,
and decided to give it a try.

I like the red one so much more than the amber one,
I sold the amber one and bought another red one.

YMMV

I have seen some pretty substantial differences in the amount of brightness in individual ACOGs with the fiber optics.  Brouhaha had an amber 3X compact ACOG and I thought it was horrible compared to red but he sent it in for warranty work because it was so dim and it came back brighter than the red TA31 I was using at the time.  If someone has only used a single version of each any perceived brightness difference might be a unit to unit variance vs a difference in actual brighness of that color.  Either will work well... I prefer red because I am used to it.  I have also used a red TA11 that was so bright is bloomed in daylight and was actually too bright.  The tritium portion can likewise vary a lot due to age of the optic.  I think the color is really just a personal preferance.

I ordered an Accupoint w/ red reticle from local dealer but I got an Accupoint w/ the amber reticle and it's sooo bright that I decided to keep it. Trijicons official stance according to one of their support guys is that the Amber is way brighter but the red contrasts more in low light but the amber is lit better by the tritium in very low light. It boils down to this ,if at possible look at both and choose which one you like better.

I never cared for the amber I tried it a couple times.  I prefer the red.
