Hey all, I was thinking about getting an ACOG off of ebay...and since it's a big purchase I wanted some advice. There are a few types, and I wanted to see who liked what....i.e. what types of reticule. Also, would you all recommend the compact scope or the standard one? I'm going to be mounting it onto a 20"a2....but would hope to swap out the upper for a flattop at some point, and all i would need to do is but some flattop adapter right? Thanks for all your advice ahead of time!!!!!! and uhh....can you turn them on/off?

Acogs are a big purchase for sure. Yes, all would need is a flattop adapter if I understand you right. In the Army, I've had regular, no fancy, no tritium crosshair reticles with range finder. It's all good but when I had a chance to put a fiber-optic cable, upside-down triangle reticle with range finder and a J-point on top, I choose that. Now, for my personally owned rifle (National Match AR15A4), I purchased a Acog with black cross hair reticle and for the night, some tritium lights up just bright enough to see the reticle. And it's topped with a DOCTOR sight for close in work. It's the perfect combo for me. You'll just need to decide what it is you want and/or need in a Acog. Good luck with your search. |

I'm happy with my TA33-8 w/ Chevron, it does a great job at the range; the reticle is bright but sharp, it doesn't blur or halo in an obstructive way as most of the battery operated holo/reflex sights do. As far as normal vs. compact go, this is a normal size ACOG and I can hardly imagine it being any smaller. I have a Leupold CQ/T as well and love it as all around good glass, but there are very few instances where I would prefer it over the ACOG. |
ACOGs with tritium are my favorite optic. Hands down. I own plenty of other optics for specialized rifles and have my share of Leupy, Nightforce and US Optics and a few others thrown in my ACOGs are #1 for me...........I just would not buy one off E-Bay. Get it here on ARF.com where there is some accountability. |
+1. ~$1,000 is a serious purchase, and there are a lot of Facogs on Ebay. I wouldn't risk buying from anyone except a reputable dealer. |
Sorry for the hijack, but didn't one of the Trijicon guys post that they have never made an ACOG without tritium? Maybe you meant no fiber optic? TA01 and TA01NSN are as you described, but they have tritium. |
Yup - that's how I remember it as well. |

Have a TA11F and a TA31F. Used to dislike the TA31F do to the shorter eye relief in favor of the TA11F. Now I see the wisdom of the TA31F and why it's actually supieror after using both for over a year. I'm acutally alot faster with the TA31F. Put my nose to the charging handle and "Poof" I'm at the correct eye relief. With the TA11F I have to move my head back and forth till I got no PARALAX. The extra eye relief of the TA11F is nice in weird positions, but slower for any normal shooting stances. |
| I love my TA33. It's less sensitive to eye relief than my dad's TA31RCO. 3x magnification seems perfect. It's plenty powerful enough for shots on man-sized targets as far away as I'd ever plan to shoot with a carbine, but it is still pretty quick up close. I have the amber chevron in mine, and I really like it. I didn't think I would like it as much as red until I tried it. |
