New here with first AR. Learning as I go.
I have a S&W 5.56 / .223 and primarily will be using it for range shooting and SHTF. I was seriously looking at Aimpoint (ML3 2moa on a Larue mount) but have come across a ACOG TA31F for $850. (brand new in the box)
Since I do not know a lot about AR optics yet I am trying to figure out if it would be overkill for me and is the price worth it. I realize the price seems good but if it will not meet my needs then it is not worth spending the capital.
thanks for your input

IMHO not worth the price.  Not for a 3x or 4x scope.  Granted they're rugged, small, and clear, but I have never been able to justify the price.  I'm and 0311 in the USMC and use them all the time, just not sold on them.  Myself personally would go with the Aimpoint.

I think they are totally worth the price.  The glass is excellent quality.  I have a S&B PMII and a USO so I know what good glass looks like.  The both eyes open  method makes using it very easy to acquire targets.  When you move the rifle fast you see everything in 1X power then you spot your target stop and your eyes adjust automatically to use the magnification.  I have an EOTech and Aimpoint and the ACOG is by far my favorite, and I'm much more accurate with it.  I recommend the green horseshoe reticle.

When  using the  Standard 25m US Army  Zeroing Target  for a  M4 carbine  when  using a issue  TA31F (TA31RCO-M4CP) mounted to the rail,   How  many clicks  do you make  when you want to  one square to the  right or left ????

If you're considering a red dot, but want a bit of magnification and a wider field of view through the scope, check out the TA44S-10 as well.

That's a decent price on the TA31F.  Do it, they're worth it and you'll be happy.  I've used the TA33's, didn't like them nearly as much.  Better eye relief, but considerably smaller field of view.
